BookILL Fest
Festival ilustracije knjige
BookILL Fest - Festival ilustracije knjige po drugi put organizuju Banatski kulturni centar i Novosadski sajam u okviru 19. međunarodnog salona knjige u Novom Sadu.

SYNAESTHESIA / 2: Space and Perception
Madi Boyd
Carrie C Firman
26 January - 10 March, 2013
Inquiries into the nature of Space and Perception are the basis of Art Laboratory Berlin's second exhibition in the Synaesthesia series. Synaesthesia, the experience of two or more sensory impressions at the same time, is both an artistic paradigm and neurological phenomenon. Two installations by Madi Boyd and Carrie C Firman explore the connection between perception and experience of mind and body from a synaesthetic point of view.
Madi Boyd is a synaesthete from Great Britain, whose artistic work focuses on perception and the brain. In collaboration with neuro-scientists, Dr. Mark Lythgoe and Dr. Beau Lotto, from University College London her work incorporates and combines installation, film and sculpture. Her recent projectThe Point of Perception explores how much information the human brain needs in order to know what it is looking at. It is an art experience and scientific arena about vision. The installation uses moving image and built environments to confuse depth perception and is designed to act specifically on the human eye and brain to create a space of uncertainty. A newly developed version of the project will be presented at Art Laboratory Berlin with the addition of sound and colour. The idea is to assign musical notes and colours to specific points in the gridded space, in order to explore perception of geometric space and sound.
Madi Boyd about her artistic work: "My work combines constructed environments and projected films to create immersive installations investigating the interaction between moving image, space, and the brain. I see the screen as sculpture and light as paint on the canvas of dark space."
Carrie C Firman is an emerging electronic artist from the US. She is a synaesthete and her work is inspired by studying and experiencing the crossing of senses. She sees synaesthesia not only as a sensory phenomenon, but also a fantastic world interface, responsible for completely unique perceptual experiences. Her current work encourages its participants to reconsider their perception as an entirely unique phenomenon, helping them to come to the realization that even most basic level of perception differs widely between otherwise similar individuals. Firman's installation Synexperience as well as her interactive digital work My Synesthetic Library invite viewers to share in her own unique perceptual experience of the world.
Carrie C Firman commented her artistic practice as follows: "The installation on display demonstrates the interactivity of my viewers I often require stepping into it, sounds and images will play, extracted from my own internal Synaesthetic library."

DAVID HILLIARD
The Tale is True
January 10 – February 16, 2013
This tale is true, and mine. It tells How the sea took me, swept me back And forth in sorrow and fear and pain, Showed me suffering in a hundred ships, In a thousand ports, and in me…
- The Seafarer (Old English Poem)
Yancey Richardson Gallery is pleased to present The Tale is True, an exhibition of new photographs byDavid Hilliard. In this new body of work, Hilliard continues to deconstruct issues surrounding familial relation-ships, and the struggle to secure a sense of self and place in a chaotic world. For over 20 years Hilliard has intermittently made photographs of his father, often including himself, exploring their relationship and the process of aging. In The Tale is True, Hilliard returns to the father-son narrative, using his multi-panel panoramas (polyptychs) to explore a family’s perseverance as they struggle to avoid an entropic slide toward ruin. Their Cape Cod family home, a legacy of generations of Yankee prosperity and tradition, serves as a symbol of identity, entrapment and history. Within these photographs, Hilliard unfolds the story of a father and son trying to maintain their physical and emotional footing while being swept up in the confluence of a complicated past and uncertain future. The tension between disillusionment and hope pervades this narrative, and is further punctuated by allegorical and symbolist cues within Hilliard’s multi-panel arrangements.
Much like the polyptychs of Renaissance ecclesiastical painting, each of Hilliard’s photographs offers the viewer the opportunity to explore from panel to panel the universal story of man’s frailty, and travails of the human spirit. Just as earlier paintings displayed stories or religious histories coupled with the mystical and mythological, Hilliard utilizes narrative and metaphor to reveal philosophical and spiritual themes of fate and faith, and the necessity of patience in adversity.
The form, concept and titling of the series is explicitly drawn from The Seafarer, an Old English elegy which tells the story of an old seafarer facing the hardships of his past in an attempt to create meaning out of his life. Hilliard’s poetic reference finds visual presence within the details of his images: figurines of sea captains, paintings of tall ships under sail, slivers of shimmering ocean glimpsed beyond the ruin of the house. The poem, though mournful, ends with an uncertain, but lasting beauty. Hilliard explains, "it’s my intention that (the photographs) serve as a testament to perseverance; within even the bleakest of histories there exist threads of enduring hope, reminding us that even in the face of great adversity, we adapt and endure."
David Hilliard received his BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston and an MFA from Yale University School of Art. A Guggenheim fellow and a Fulbright recipient, he has received numerous awards and honors. His work is included in the permanent collections of at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. He recently completed tenure as Artist in Residence at Dartmouth College and is currently Director of Post-Baccalaureate Program in Photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

THE JERWOOD/FILM AND VIDEO UMBRELLA AWARDS
TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS:
Ed Atkins and Naheed Raza
Jerwood Visual Arts at Jerwood Space, London, SE1: 16 January – 24 February 2013
CCA, Glasgow: 8 June – 20 July 2013
This January, the recipients of the Jerwood/Film and Video Umbrella Awards, Ed Atkins and Naheed Raza, premiere their ambitious new commissions at Jerwood Visual Arts (JVA), Jerwood Space, London. Presented as the second part of the exhibition Tomorrow Never Knows, the new works will be on show from 16 January until 24 February 2013.
The exhibition is the culmination of the first two-year cycle of the Jerwood/Film and Video Umbrella Awards. This initiative occupies a distinctive place alongside other awards for contemporary moving-image artists. It supports young and emerging talents and focuses on practical, developmental support, in which the nurturing of ideas and expertise is consolidated by substantial production opportunities. Alongside this support of future talent, the project speculates on ideas and images of ‘the future’, and different perceptions of that future in the present and in the past.
Naheed Raza’s new commission continues her exploration of the phenomenon of cryonics. This technologically-assisted attempt to extend the span of human life still has its acolytes around the world but also seems strangely dated, like the product of Sixties science-fiction. Raza’s large-scale projection work, filmed at different institutes in the United States, delves deeper into our complex and often ambiguous relationship with death, contrasting individuals’ belief in scientific progress with the age-old fantasy of overcoming nature's ultimate limit.
If cryonics seeks to preserve the body indefinitely, contemporary computer imaging seeks to render it in ever more life-like ways. Although modern motion-capture techniques can seem either cold and clinical, or alien and uncanny, Ed Atkins’ work evokes that spark of vitality and individuality that is often to be found in visceral actions or inadvertent gestures. Where the subjects of Raza’s video are stored, in suspended animation, at sub-zero temperatures, Atkins sets his piece at the bottom of the ocean, as if implying both the murky, latent presence of the unconscious and the way it threatens to surface at any moment.
The Jerwood/Film and Video Umbrella Awards have, over the course of their two-year span, considered the work of a 50-strong shortlist of nominated artists, and developed and exhibited four pilot projects from which two have now been extended into substantial commissions. The commissions focus on past and present perceptions of ‘the future’. Selected from a quartet of artists (alongside Emma Hart and Corin Sworn) who first showed their pilot pieces at Jerwood Visual Arts in the spring of 2012, Atkins and Raza have been working closely with Film and Video Umbrella on these new commissions.

SEBASTIAN DIAZ MORALES
Ficcionario
27 January - 23 March 2013
Galerie Catherine Bastide is pleased to announce the solo exhibition Ficcionario by Argentinian born, Amsterdam based artist Sebastian Diaz Morales (1975). Presenting three ambitious video works;Insight along with accompanying storyboard, Pasajes and Smoke Signals. An archeologist of the image, Diaz Morales questions perception itself in a trio of his most arresting films to date.
Abstraction today is no longer that of the map, the double, the mirror or the concept. Simulation is no longer that of a territory, a referential being or a substance. It is the generation by models of a real without origin or reality: a hyperreal. The territory no longer precedes the map, nor survives it. Henceforth, it is the map that precedes the territory - PRECESSION OF SIMULACRA - it is the map that engenders the territory....(Baudrillard, 1994, p. 1)
Insight is the total abstraction. A carefully assembled film-crew appears like a tableau vivant facing the viewer. Then suddenly, they shatter- an analogy of breaking through the surface to expose the simulation- a mirror slowly explodes into a thousand pieces. Filmed in beautifully rendered high definition Insight is a tribute to the camera obscuras of old mingled with a critical spirit directed towards the mass media today. Regarded as a phenomenon brought about by a world lacking distinction between real and simulacra, Diaz Morales borrows media industry tactics to expose and undermine. Revealing rather than concealing his methods allows for a moment of realisation to occur. As the pieces of glass crumble into tiny galaxies, context is deconstructed and the universalising tendency of Diaz Morales' practise literally portrayed. With timeless grace the artist contemplates the nature of existence.
Informed by the philosophy of Jorge Luis Borges' text 'On Exactitude in Science' Diaz Morales presents a reformulation of reality. Here, a fictional Empire builds a life-size map identical to the Empire they inhabit. A psycho-geographic conceit- the map becomes the territory, the territory the map. The notion of the 'map' as a co-existent reality anchors Diaz Morales’ works, believing that we are all inhabitants of such maps, and the territory a long-lost relic.
As Borges’ story concludes with the destruction of the map by later generations, Diaz Morales' continuous construction and destruction of realities is symptomatic of a world where the original no longer exists, only a succession of simulations. Diaz Morales is the inventor of scenarios of infinite potential. Renouncing the limitations of narrative in favour of something less fixed, directionless-ness presents itself as a timely, though uncomfortable agent of endless and pointless opportunity.
Pasajes is a grounded allegory of such endless realities; inviting the viewer along through door after door of interlinked, unconnected worlds; a cobblers, an abandoned building, a gym, a museum. A labyrinth-like demonstration of the versatility of reality unfolds. Scenes of abandoned grandeur follow the everyday whilst the walking figure remains a passive subject of his constantly altering environment - a ceaseless progression, though not one that necessarily indicates positive change. We see cities that neglect their past in favour of a malfunctioning future. Although localised in the city of Buenos Aires, Diaz Morales seeks the essence of the nature of all cities. At any moment the door could open on your parallel reality, into the room you occupy...
...and into the map you inhabit, the one that has ordered your perception of the world. Meanwhile - elaborating on the dangerous 'realities' created by the mass media - Smoke Signals offers a different optional perception. It is a representation of a street protest with all the specificities removed in favour of a newsprint-like filter that obscures detail. An attempt at reclassifying a widely recognised media perpetrated motif or, what could be called an act of anti-propaganda. Turning the camera on itself Diaz Morales re-appropriates its function. Confronting the viewer with its indifferent gaze, it becomes a troublesome symbol of reality multiplied and magnified.
Whether or not you subscribe to the philosophy of the co-existent maps, Ficcionario leaves a lingering impression; reality is malleable, what’s yours?

LUCAS FOGLIA
A Natural Order
18 January to 8 March 2013
Belfast Exposed is pleased to present A Natural Order by Lucas Foglia, which looks at the lives of communities of people across the United States who have chosen to live ‘off the grid’:
"I grew up with my extended family on a small farm in the suburbs of New York City. While malls and supermarkets developed around us, we heated our house with wood, farmed and canned our food, and bartered the plants we grew for everything from shoes to dental work. But while my family followed many of the principles of the back-to-the-land movement, by the time I was eighteen we owned three tractors, four cars, and five computers. This mixture of the modern world in our otherwise rustic life made me curious to see what a completely self-sufficient way of living might look like.
From 2006 through 2010, I traveled throughout the southeastern United States befriending, photographing, and interviewing a network of people who left cities and suburbs to live off the grid. Motivated by environmental concerns, religious beliefs, or predictions of economic collapse, they build their homes from local materials, obtain their water from nearby springs, and hunt, gather, or grow their own food.
All the people in my photographs are working to maintain a self-sufficient lifestyle, but no one I found lives in complete isolation from the mainstream. Many have websites that they update using laptop computers, and cell phones that they charge on car batteries or solar panels. They do not wholly reject the modern world. Instead, they step away from it and choose the parts that they want to bring with them."
- Lucas Foglia, 2012
Lucas Foglia (b. 1983) was raised on a small family farm in New York and is currently based in San Francisco. A graduate of Brown University and the Yale School of Art, Lucas exhibits and publishes his photographs internationally. His work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Pilara Foundation and the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Fine Art. His photographs have been published in Aperture Magazine, the New York Times Magazine, the Washington Post Magazine, British Journal of Photography, Contact Sheet, Wired and PDN’s 30 among others. His first book, A Natural Order, was published by Nazraeli Press in 2012.

Sve što radim i sto sam radio je uvijek bilo usmjereno činjenju dobra, jer dobro, dobro daje. No, obrazloženje vaše POVELJE zaista mi mnogo znači jer pokazuje da sam do sada i uspio u tome.

11.12.2012.
Maja Milinković Simonelli i Ansambl “Fado Verdadeiro”
“Fado i ja” u Art kinu Kriterion, Obala Kulina Bana 2 (bivše kino Tesla), Sarajevo, Bosna i Hercegovina, u petak, 14.12.2012. godine, u 20:00 sati.

Gradonačelnik Alija Behmen nagradu će uručiti pjesniku Pejiću 23. novembra u Narodnom pozorištu u drugom dijelu svečanosti, koju će Gradsko vijeće Grada Sarajeva zajedno sa SABNOR-om BiH i općinskim vijećima četiri gradske općine upriličiti povodom Dana državnosti Bosne i Hercegovine.

Grupa Junij exhibition part of Eyes-On Festival: Month of Photography in Vienna
GRUPA JUNIJ
Selection of photographs from International Art Collection Junij
Opening: Tuesday, 6 November at 7 pm!
Eyes-On Festival / Slovenian Cultural Centre Korotan
Albertgasse 48, 1080 Vienna
Photon – Centre for Contemporary Photography is taking part of Eyes-On Festival with the Grupa Junij exhibition, selection of photographs from International Art Collection Junij of Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana and from personal archive of group's founding member, Stane Jagodič.
“Grupa Junij” was established in 1969 by a group of young artists in order to bring together similar creative impulses. The significance of the group therefore surpassed the range of a homogeneous art group that adopted principles that follow the example of the successors of historical avant-garde and created a constructive synthesis of different styles and trends. The main idea embraced by the group was the autonomy of art as such, freed of any political, academic, and aesthetic demands for pure styles and genres.
During the period, in which modernist painting and sculpture prevailed, the members of “Grupa Junij” resorted to reproducible media, particularly the innovative use of photography, although there was a broad range of different forms of expression and media. Because of their diversity, the creative practices of the group cannot be generalised, however the common characteristic of a broad range of different artists gathered in “Grupa Junij” is connected with figuralism, narrative art, and a direct expression of a message. The group was highly sensitive to the socio-political events of that time, which it translated into a highly original artistic language without any reservations. Their works were steeped in the spirit of the 1970s and early 1980s, as well as topics such as ecology, global demography and the related side effects of accelerated urbanisation, alienation, militancy, repression by state institutions, and growing consumerism.
The International Art Collection Junij had organically grown because of the contacts with number of prominent artists. In 1996 Junij Association, represented by group’s founding member Stane Jagodič, donated the extensive collection to the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana. There are over 140 international artists with around 1300 works. The exhibition in Vienna represents the selection of previous exhibition Junij in June that took place in Museum of Architecture and Design in frames of 6th Photonic Moments festival in Ljubljana.
Grupa Junij exhibition is the result of collaboration between Photon – Centre for Contemporary Photography and Museum of Architecture and Design Ljubljana.
Exhibition is open until 16 December 2012!

Gdje: Umjetnička galerija BiH, Zelenih beretki 8, Sarajevo
Vrijeme izlaganja 10-15 minuta.
O temi će govoriti: Adisa Bašić (Sarajevo), Mirjana Đurđević (Beograd), Marina Katnić Bakaršić (Sarajevo), Katica Kulavkova (Skoplje), Andrea Lešić (Sarajevo), PerinaMeić (Mostar), Venita Popović, (Zenica), Barbara Simoniti (Ljubljana) Svetlana Slapšak (Ljubljana-Beograd), Šejla Šehabović (Tuzla), Tanja Stupar Trifunović (Banjaluka), Edi Shukriu (Priština), Dragana Tripković (Podgorica).

S VELIKOM RADOŠĆU POZIVAMO VAS DA S NAMA OBILJEŽITE 20. GODIŠNJICU OD OSNIVANJA PEN CENTRA U BOSNI I HERCEGOVINI
KNJIŽEVNO VEČE SA DUBRAVKOM UGREŠIĆ
Srijeda 31. oktobar/listopad
Art atelje Figure, Sarajevo
Vrijeme: 19.00-21.00

O ovim i drugim pitanjima razgovarat će Dijala Hasanbegović, novinarka, i Nenad Veličković, književnik.

WE ARE HAPPY TO INVITE YOU TO MARK 20 YEARS OF THE ESTABLISHING OF PEN CENTER IN BOSNIA-HERZEGOVINA, SARAJEVO
EVENING WITH DUBRAVKA UGRESIC
Wensday October 31st
Figure Art Atellier in Sarajevo 7.00 – 9.00 p.m.
One of the most prominent European writers, Ms. Dubravka Ugrešić (Zagreb, Croatia – Amsterdam, The Nederlands) will be key speaker to mark 20 years of the establishing of PEN Center in Bosnia-Herzegovina (www.penbih.ba). Ms. Ugrešić will talk about the Balkans and her interpretation of the Balkans, about gender issues, studies and problems related to that in this region, about nationalism in Balkans literature(s), and how to oppose it, about „the narcisism of small differences“ (Milan Kundera) that form our cultural codes; also about Kundera's „terror of a small context“, and about cultural relations between countries of the Western Balkans. Are the languages that we speak today really so different that we can no longer understand each other? How much has the phenomenon of the Eastern-European Literature melted after the fall of the Berlin Wall? Is dissident literature present in Europe today at all? What does that mean for the states established upon the fall of Yugoslavia? Is in general it necessary for a writer to be a dissident?
In 2002 PEN Center in Bosnia-Herzegovina gave Mr. Ugrešić The Award for Preserving Dignity of Literature during Balkan wars 1991-1995.
More about Ms. Ugrešić on: www.dubravkaugresic.com
Ms. Dijala Hasanbegović, journalist, and Mr. Nenad Veličković, writer, will talk with Ms. Ugrešić.

inaugurazione sabato 6 ottobre 2012 ore 18,00
Della raccolta saranno esposti libri a stampa tipografica con tiratura editoriale, edizioni in proprio, opere concettuali, narrative art, opere plastiche e visive, poesia concreta, poesia sonora, poesia visiva, fluxus, scrittura visuale, pittura/scrittura, fanzine, riviste d’arte e poetiche, libri elettronici.
Ignazio Apolloni, Nobuyoshi Araki, Calogero Barba, Umberto Basso, Carlo Belloli, Jacopo Benassi - Canecapovolto - Federico Lupo, Max Bense, Rosetta Bernardi, Luisa Bergamini, Joseph Beuys, Peter Blake, John Cage, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Francesco Antonio Caporale, Ugo Carrega, Stefano Caruano, Giuseppe Chiari, Henri Chopin, Ryosuke Cohen, Letterio Consiglio, Silvio Craia, Eleonora Cumer, Maria Pia Fanna Roncoroni, Vincenzo Ferrari, Luc Fierens, Salvatore Fiume, Giovanni Fontana, Nicola Frangione, Enrico Gabrielli - Martini Merlini –Tellas, Lillo Giuliana, Eugen Gomringer, Gruppo Sinestetico, Emilio Isgrò, Michele Lambo, Carlo Lauricella, Alonso Lentini, Arrigo Lora Totino, Gian Ruggero Manzoni - Omar Galliani, Enzo Mari - Carla Vasio, Italo Medda, Eugenio Miccini, Mauro Molinari, Bruno Munari, Fabian Negrin, Marcello Palminteri, Antonio Paradiso, Luca Maria Patella, Enzo Patti, Giancarlo Pavanello, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Teresa Pollidori, Man Ray, Giuseppina Riggi, Mapi Rivera, Niki de Saint Phalle, Antonio Saladino, Salvatore Salamone, Antonio Sassu, Alba Savoi, Alfonso Siracusa, Franco Spena, Fausta Squatriti, Sol LeWitt, Delfo Tinnirello, Patrik Thomas, Agostino Tulumello.

2.10.2012. Najava dešavanja u art kinu Kriterion, Sarajevo, Bosna i Hercegovina
Cijena ulaznice iznosi 5 KM.
