Interview
Can you tell us something about your hometown and growing up?
-------I was born in Tokyo. I grew up near Yoyogi Park. I loved playing in the rich greenery there.
When did you discover your artistic talent?
--------I have loved drawing since a young age. My mother told me that all of our screen windows were filled with my graffiti.
Where do you find inspiration and whose artistic work do you enjoy most?
---------I find myself inspired by memories of my childhood, scenery from long mountain walks and town walks, color compositions I happened to rest my eye on, and magazine pages.
I love Paul Klee. Recently I was very moved by a Cy Twombly exhibition.
Is there anything that connects poetry and painting? How do you see them together?
-----------Poetry and visual art both move people's inner life. When I draw for poetry I want my work to resonate with poetry like a tuning fork.
The paintings of artist have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions ?
-----------My solo show will be held in Tokyo this autumn.
The true purpose of art is to uplift humankind, inspire reverence and morality, and instill in people’s hearts a true sense of beauty?
-----------Jungian psychologist Hayao Kawai said, roughly translated, that artists are the ones who make for individuals a universal meaning.
I think so too.
What can you tell us about your work, prizes, journeys and friendships?
------------About a prize, I have not received one since childhood. I am just happy everyday to have assignments or sales of my pieces.
I have been rather busy for child-care so far. I have travelled domestically, but from now on I would like to enjoy visiting new cultures and new places.
I find fun just hanging out with my friends, and if I can talk about life, that's the most valuable for me.
Do you think you have outwitted the expectations?
------------My parents never have imagined I would make my living drawing pictures.
When they saw books with my drawing on the cover in bookstores, they were shocked.
How do you manage all that with so much work that you do? Do you have time for yourself? What inspires you?
------------I always like to be selective about assignments. I value time for Yoga, reading, and jogging . I try to be loyal to what my heart says.
Is there anything that you could pinpoint and tell us about yourself between dreams and reality?
-------------About my work and myself, I've never been as perfect as I would like to be. I'm always traveling back and forth between them.
What are your plans for the future creative work?
-------------I have worked mostly for illustration assignments, I am planing to work more for galleries.
Tamae Mizukami’s career in a few years?
-------------Magazine assignments, book covers, artworks for public buildings.
Have you achieved everything you have ever wanted to and if you could live your life again would you be an artist again?
-------------If I have a chance for another life, I would love to be a musician. Music is the supreme form of art, but regrettably I didn't have any talent. Whatever I do, I would like to create something beautiful and moving.
Is there anything you would like to say that you think is important and that I haven’t asked you ?
-------------I have tried to grasp the world, what the world is about. Beauty is linked to that deep-rooted question.
