Sloviti multimedialni umetnik Christo iz New Yorka je preminil zadnjo nedeljo v maju letošnjega leta. Z ženo Jeanne Claude sta kot umetnostni tandem izredno ustvarjalno sodelovala z mednarodno Grupo Junij, in to od leta 1977 naprej. Slovenski publiki sta se na Gradu Podsreda, v Galeriji Cankarjevega doma in Galeriji Piran predstavila tudi s samostojno razstavo. Zastopana sta z dokumentarnimi fotografijami v Mednarodni zbirki Junij, katera se nahaja v Muzeju za arhitekturo in oblikovanje v Ljubljani. Zbirko dopolnjuje pisemska korespondenca in grafično gradivo.
Christo je bil po rodu Bolgar (Kristo Vladimirov Javačev) in je v Franciji odkril idealno življensko sopotnico Jeanne Claude. Oba sta bila rojena v juniju, na isti dan in istega leta, (podobno kot v juniju rojeni ustanovni člani Grupe Junij: Harald Draušbaher, Viktor Gojkovič, Stane Jagodič in Enver Kaljanac). Jeanne je Christu nadvse razumevajoče pomagala pri organizaciji zahtevnih projektov, pri fotografiranju, komuniciranju in predstavitvah ustvarjalnih zamisli. Z njim je sodelovala tudi po idejni, kreativni plati, in je bila sčasoma imenovana kot soavtorka projektov. Umrla je leta 2009 v New Yorku.
Christo in Jeanne sta pri delu koristila konceptualne postopke v smislu pogrinjanja, uporabe zaves, dežnikov, ovijanja predmetov, zavijanja znamenitih arhitekturnih objektov, in izvedla drzne scenske posege v naravo. Dosegla sta gigantske, fantazijsko domišljene scenarije (1972- 2010), ki nimajo para v svetovni likovni umetnosti: Zavitje avstralske obale, Zastor v dolini Kolorada, Tekoča ograja v Kaliforniji, Zaviti most Pont Neuf v Parizu, Oblečeni Reichtag v Berlinu itd...
Kot odličen tandem sta osvojila težko dojemljive organizacijsko neponovljive posege v urbani in naravni prostor. Njuni linearno razgibani scenariji vsebujejo konkavno konveksne forme, ki spominjajo na ogromne mobile, s katerimi se poigravajo svetloba, veter in voda. Napete in valovite forme vzbujajo hrepenenje, ki ponazarja zakritost, nedotakljivost in slikovito alegorijo.
Drzne krajinske intervencije nas iz pozemeljske priklenjenosti popeljejo v svet skrivnostnih kozmičnih dimenzij in vibracij.

Spoštovani kolega Fontcuberta, spoštovani gostje!
V Titovi neuvrščeni, socialistični Jugoslaviji se je življenje v marsičem razlikovalo od bivanja v državah, ki so pripadale vzhodnemu komunističnemu bloku, kjer za železno zaveso ni obstajala svoboda umetniškega ustvarjanja, svobodnega tiska in prostega komuniciranja z zapadnim svetom. Grupa Junij, ustanovljena leta 1970 (ustanovni člani: Harald Draušbaher, Stane Jagodič, Enver Kaljanac, Viktor Gojkovič) ni imela teh težav, zato so njeni stalni člani lahko sproščeno ustvarjali in se svobodno povezovali z naprednimi umetniki širom sveta, in razstave posvetili pionirjem vizualne umetnosti: Man Rayu, Marcelu Duchampu in de Chiricu.
S pomočjo skrbno pripravljenih katalogov in kozmopolitsko naravnanega manifesta, je grupa sprožila živahno mednarodno gibanje naklonjeno progresivni umetnosti in to s poudarkom na kreativni fotografiji, satirični risbi, karikaturi in asemblažu.
Privabili smo številne mednarodno prepoznavne avtorje, med katere je sodil tudi, današnji gost Joan Foncuberta, ki je pričel z nami sodelovati leta 1977 na razstavi, ki je bila posvečena Man Rayu. In to ne samo s kvalitetno fotomotiviko, iz katere je izstopala fotomontaža poetične vsebine ‘Zakaj tega ne rečeš?’, datirana z letom 1974. Sodeloval je tudi v programskem smislu, po razstavi nam je predlagal imenitne španske fotografe, ki so bili povezani v Grupi Alabern: Rafael Navarro, Pere Formiguera, Man Esclusa, kateri je tudi sam pripadal. Kasneje je predlagal še nekatere fotografe in mednarodno delovanje Grupe Junij predstavil v španskih glasilih: ‘Nueva Lente’ in ‘Correo Katalan’. Razstavo v Mestni galeriji je osebno obiskal in to družno z likovno kritičarko Cristino Zelich, ki je za madridski časopis FLASH FOTO napisala obširno kritiko o razstavi Prisotnost metafizike, ki je bila leta 1980 postavljena v Moderni galeriji, Ljubljana.
Na razstavah Grupe Junij so sodelovali svetovno priznani umetniki in tudi pomagali pri izboru ustvarjalcev. Na primer: Lorenzo Merlo iz Amsterdama, Christo in Jeanne Claude iz New Yorka, Roman Cieslewicz iz Pariza, Floris M. Neususs iz Kasla itd.
Ob tem moram omeniti tudi slovenske galeriste, muzealce, ki so nam omogočili razstave: Drago Medved in Marlen Premšak, Božena Plevnik, Dr Peter Krečič in Dr Stane Bernik, Dr Zoran Kržišnik,
Dr Ivan Sedej, Dr Meta Gabršek Prosenc, Nina Pirnat in Dr Jovo Grobovšek, katerim so se pridružil tudi galeristi iz ostalih republik Jugoslavije, zato so razstave potovale v Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Rovinj, Karlovac, Beograd, Novi Sad, Sarajevo in Skopje. V manjšem obsegu tudi v tujino: Avstrijo, Francijo, Italijo, Budimpešto in Istanbul in so bile z navdušenjem sprejete.
Joan Fontcuberta je razstavljal na vseh pomebnejših razstavah Junij, tudi na legendarni prireditvi ‘Mesec fotografije Pariz 1988’ na kateri je bil vključen izbor fotografij iz Mednarodne zbirke Junij, ki ga je opravil Dr Lev Menaše.
Omenjenemu izboru v sekciji ‘Aspekti evropske kreativne fotografije 1968-1988’ je strokovna žirija dodelila najvišje priznanje in denarno nagrado v višini 100.000 FF, za kar se je potegovalo 35 pariških galerij, muzejev. To priznanje nam je pomenilo veliko duhovno zadoščenje, kajti celotna zbirka, leta 1985 prvič predstavljena v Likovnem razstavišču Rihard Jakopič, je bila v ljubljanski reviji deležna privoščljive, zelo žaljive kritike. No, bile so tudi pozitivne.
Sicer pa ima zbirka pretresljivo preteklost, večkrat se je brez moje vednosti selila iz skladišča v skladišče in na koncu po desetdnevni slovenski osamosvojitveni vojni pristala na nekdanjem kasarniškem dvorišču, v kovinskem zabojniku, ki je služil za scenografijo Ljubljanske opere. K sreči sva jo delno okrnjeno s prijateljem Dušanom Kidričem rešila in leta 1996 sta jo pod streho,
Arhitekturnega muzeja končno prijazno sprejela Dr Peter Krečič in Dr Primož Lampič, kjer je do danes deponirana. Zato se danes nahajamo v teh grajskih prostorih ob šumeči reki Ljubljanici, v katerem Dejan Sluga, direktor Galerija Photon gosti umetnika iz Barcelone, nekdanjega odličnega sodelavca Grupe Junij.
Joan, od najinega prvega srečanja na odročnem in hribovitem Gornjem Rudniku je preteklo okrog 40 let, vendar imam še vedno živo v spominu kako si se s Cristino nepričakovano pojavil pred vrati podnajemniške hiške, v rokah držal odprt katalog Grupe Junij z mojim portretom in ženo Greto radovedno vprašal ali gre za pravi naslov.
In nato smo si ob vznemirljivem srečanju nazdravili s šilcem slivovice, iz mojega mladostnega kraja Šmarje pri Jelšah.

The Junij artistic and spiritual flow has a tendency towards:
NEW MEDIA . BREAKING DOWN BORDERS AMONG DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES AND GENRES . EMPHASIS ON NEW SENSITIVITIES . UNCONVENTIONAL INTERVENTIONS INTO URBAN AREA AND LANDSCAPE . NEW EVALUATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT, NAKED HUMAN BODY . DEEPENING INTO THE PSYCHE OF A MODERN MAN AND SOCIETY . PENETRATIONS INTO UNKNOWN DIMENSIONS OF MACRO AND MICROCOSMOS
The protest and committed part of the exhibitions echoes like a CRY against the ecological crisis, deformation of the contemporary saturated urbanism, alienation, consumerism, annihilation of values, bureaucracy, reactionary tendencies, threat of militarization, bloc division of the world, imperialism, hegemony, racism, and evil of any kind.
The ideas have been realized in the sense of awareness and warning at the presence of satire, humour and alternative form solutions. There has always been a stress on promotion of a SPIRITUALLY REBORN FREE MAN . CULTIVATED HABITAT . BALANCE BETWEEN NATURE AND TECHNOLOGY . PROTECTION OF FLORA AND FAUNA . PROTECTION OF UNIVERSAL SPACE . SENSITIVE PERCEPTION OF THE WORLD AND TECHNICAL PHENOMENA IN HARMONY WITH NATURE.
The interwoven spiritual, ideological and technical orientations are logical results of the life and the world with all its laws: birth - life - death / nostalgia - contemporary commitment - visionary spirit / real - surreal - abstract / micro - man - macro. Frequent and characteristic elements of artistic and spiritual solutions of the permanent members of the Junij Group and their guest artists: expressivity, varied transposition of the real into surreal symbols, and abstracted or completely abstract solutions with poetic stresses. Metamorphosis of a human being ranging from: robot - puppet / shadow - negative / marked by the birth, longing, hovering, constraint, deformation, disappearance, dying away, traces. The ideas were often carried out in sequences or dynamic special three-dimensional solutions with the stressed monumental, symmetrical composition and serialization, multiplication of form elements. Linear dynamics was created by various nets, rasters, folded elements, found in nature or created by artists themselves. A cage, packaging, a tin, a mask, a chain, a rope, a wound, blood, all these are the elements of the committed expression and contemporary philosophical speculations about the essence of the world and cosmos. It is characteristic to create the tension between hard and soft form, live and dead matter, smooth and deformed surface. There also appear secret openings, bubbling, boil over of the mass confined by a hard geometrical system. Low lighting from one side emphasizes dramatic effects and expressiveness with contrasting appearance of shapes and shadows. There are also motifs with their own source of light and the intensity of radiance, which creates an atmosphere of celebration, spiritual enlightenment (concentric circle, square, check-like pattern, ellipse).
The permanent members of the Junij Group advocated, with their own solutions, and some of them also verbally, solid artistic criteria which demand the balance of the mind and emotion, spirituality, imagination, vision, seeking the meaning of the human existence.
Rhythm, harmony, coordination according to the principle of natural tectonics, growth, dynamics, colour and light laws, transposed through a creative action are the eternal elements of artistic creativity. The art is built on the complete synthesis of the intelect - emotion - spirituality / rational - irrational / organic - unorganic, the life experience and profound philosophy.

Photon – Centre for Contemporary Photography is taking part of Eyes-On Festival with the Grupa Junij exhibition, selection of photographs from International Art Collection Junij of Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana and from personal archive of group's founding member, Stane Jagodič.
“Grupa Junij” was established in 1969 by a group of young artists in order to bring together similar creative impulses. The significance of the group therefore surpassed the range of a homogeneous art group that adopted principles that follow the example of the successors of historical avant-garde and created a constructive synthesis of different styles and trends. The main idea embraced by the group was the autonomy of art as such, freed of any political, academic, and aesthetic demands for pure styles and genres.

During the period, in which modernist painting and sculpture prevailed, the members of “Grupa Junij” resorted to reproducible media, particularly the innovative use of photography, although there was a broad range of different forms of expression and media. Because of their diversity, the creative practices of the group cannot be generalised, however the common characteristic of a broad range of different artists gathered in “Grupa Junij” is connected with figuralism, narrative art, and a direct expression of a message. The group was highly sensitive to the socio-political events of that time, which it translated into a highly original artistic language without any reservations. Their works were steeped in the spirit of the 1970s and early 1980s, as well as topics such as ecology, global demography and the related side effects of accelerated urbanisation, alienation, militancy, repression by state institutions, and growing consumerism.
The International Art Collection Junij had organically grown because of the contacts with number of prominent artists. In 1996 Junij Association, represented by group’s founding member Stane Jagodič, donated the extensive collection to the Museum of Architecture and Design in Ljubljana. There are over 140 international artists with around 1300 works. The exhibition in Vienna represents the selection of previous exhibition Junij in June that took place in Museum of Architecture and Design in frames of 6th Photonic Moments festival in Ljubljana.
Grupa Junij exhibition is the result of collaboration between Photon – Centre for Contemporary Photography and Museum of Architecture and Design Ljubljana.
Exhibition is open until 16 December 2012!
