BANNER REPEATER, London, United Kingdom
Open Call for Submissions to Group Exhibition - Deadline: 31st May
Selection Panel: Ben Vickers, Alana Kushnir, Helen Kaplinsky, and Ami Clarke
Sean Dockray of aaaaarg.org. (2012)
We are asking for submissions of works that emanate from broadly speaking: artistic practice, as individuals or collectives, as well as other trans-disciplinary working arrangements, for a group exhibition to be held at Banner Repeater in June – August that consider the following:
"When the structure that something takes influences the shape the content takes, and also the ways that people might approach that content and use it, and likewise, the content begins to affect the structure as well" (1), we can begin to understand the binding between humans and technology as a co-evolution.
Of particular interest are new relations that come of issues regarding copyright, patents, trademarks, and the consequences of trade secrets, brought to the fore by digital media.
"Intellectual property rights, at least for patents and copyrights, may be considered rights in ideal objects. Patents can be obtained only for "practical" applications of ideas, but not for more abstract or theoretical ideas. Philosophical, mathematical or scientific truths cannot be protected under current law on the grounds that commerce and social intercourse would grind to a halt were every new phrase, philosophical truth, and the like, considered the exclusive property of its creator.
But the distinction between creation and discovery is not clear-cut or rigorous. Nor is it clear why such a distinction, even if clear, is ethically relevant in defining property rights. No one creates matter; they just manipulate and grapple with it according to physical laws. In this sense, no one really creates anything. They merely rearrange matter into new arrangements and patterns. An engineer who invents a new mousetrap has rearranged existing parts to provide a function not previously performed. Others who learn of this new arrangement can now also make an improved mousetrap. Yet the mousetrap merely follows laws of nature. The inventor did not invent the matter out of which the mousetrap is made, nor the facts and laws exploited to make it work." (2)
We are interested in works that consider how content might be shaped by structural form and vice versa, that appropriate images/objects, and structures beyond the object, that challenge or critique all, or any of the above ideas, that might address:
the means of production and systems of distribution,
legal structures with re new issues of copyright,
social media and the production of social relations,
institutional structures and educational systems,
structures of the gallery, art market, and beyond….
It is worth noting that all technologies, on, and offline, are of interest.
The open submission fee is £10 (to cover administration costs): please pay here.
Please send your submission to [email protected] with OPEN SUBMISSION in the header by the 31st May.
Successful submissions will be notified by 5th June, and must be able to deliver work to Banner Repeater (where appropriate) on 10th – 12th June, ready for opening on the 14th June.
All BANNER REPEATER Associate Members enjoy free submission to the annual open submission exhibition as well as other benefits:
AMPP - Associate Membership Peer Programme.
Selection Panel:
Ben Vickers is a writer, network analyst, curator, technologist and luddite. He makes a living and finds a vocation in understanding how systems of distribution, both human and other, come to affect our personal perception of reality. Vickers is currently Curator of Digital at the Serpentine, co-runs LIMAZULU Project Space, is an active member of EdgeRyders, leads Brighton University's Professional ‘Reality' Development Program and facilitates the development of unMonastery, a new kind of social space designed to serve the local communities of towns or small cities throughout Europe in solving key social and infrastructural problems.
Alana Kushnir is a freelance curator and art lawyer based in London. She is completing the MFA Curating program at Goldsmiths and prior to this, was working in Melbourne, Australia at the law firm King & Wood Mallesons, where she specialised in competition and intellectual property law. Her curatorial practice and research explores the intersections of intellectual property law, curating and art practices influenced by internet culture. Recent curated exhibitions include TV Dinners at BUS Projects, Melbourne (2012), Acoustic Mirrors (co-curator) at the Zabludowicz Collection, London (2012),Paraproduction at Boetzelaer|Nispen Gallery, Amsterdam (2012) and Fourth Plinth: Contemporary Monument (co-curator) at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (2012-13). She has presented her research in a wide range of contemporary art publications and academic journals, including the Journal of Curatorial Studies, Leonardo Almanac and the self-published exhibition-zine, Paraproduction.
Helen Kaplinsky is a London based independent curator, tracing the confluence of contemporary art and the history of design. She has worked with the Arts Council Collection since 2011, having received a fellowship with the collection whilst studying Curating MFA at Goldsmiths University from 2009-11. Upcoming projects include a residency with Flux Factory (NYC), Muscle Memory and Auto Couture (both London). She lectures in Art and Design at City Literacy Institute. Her current research concerns consumer technologies, the Romantic imagination and post-fordism.
Ami Clarke both facilitates the running of Banner Repeater: reading room and project space, on Platform 1, Hackney Downs train station, opening up an experimental space for others, whilst dually sharing the goal in her practice to explore ideas that come of publishing, distribution, and dissemination: how the performance of language increasingly impacts upon daily life. BR commissions new art-writing for the publication UN-PUBLISH: a series of critical works published on paper, determined by ideas of shifting time and labour relations, that bear witness to epigenetic affects that may come of these new conditions. She is a co-founder of the Diagram Research, Use and Generation Group (DRUGG). Upcoming projects include Data-Pool 3, and Low Animal Spirits.

What our past prize recipients are saying
"Receiving an unrestricted monetary award from Dave Bown Projects was a very pleasant surprise for me. It afforded me the opportunity to be able to buy additional supplies I needed, in particular, larger panels to paint on. Also, the recognition on their web site gained me more web site traffic and I got the opportunity to work with a new gallery as a direct result of the recognition from the award."

Jerwood Open Forest
New initiative: The forests are open for ideas Closing date for entries: 5pm, 28th May 2013 Submission fee: £25 Jerwood Visual Arts (JVA) and Forestry Commission England are delighted to announce Jerwood Open Forest, an exceptional opportunity for visual artists to propose ideas for a major new £30,000 commission to be realised anywhere within England's Public Forest Estate.
There is no brief. The forests are open for artists’ ideas. This is a call for bold, broad‐thinking proposals that explore the potential of forests as sites for art, both in and about the environment. Proposals can be for work in any discipline or medium, temporary or permanent, site‐specific or for touring to more than one location. Launching the initiative, the partnership between Jerwood Visual Arts and Forestry Commission England brings together the expertise of two esteemed national organisations. Jerwood Open Forest will facilitate new interactions between artists and forests and will open up new art experiences to a wide public audience. It aims to lead a national conversation about how contemporary visual artists engage with the environment today. The selection panel will include leading practitioners and project partners: Michaela Crimmin Co‐founder, Culture+Conflict Tania Kovats Artist Shonagh Manson Director, Jerwood Charitable Foundation Hayley Skipper Curator of Arts Development, Forestry Commission England From initial ideas submitted, five artists will be selected to receive a £2,000 Research and Development fee to develop their proposals over a six‐month period. Each artist will be fully supported by Jerwood Visual Arts and Forestry Commission England to expand on the concept, assess the viability of the idea and explore potential sites through this phase. This research process will culminate in a curated exhibition at JVA at Jerwood Space which will present the artists' work and explore broader contemporary debates around critical practice and art in the public realm and the environment. During the exhibition one artist will be selected to receive a £30,000 commissioning budget to realise their proposal. “Forestry Commission England holds the key to a unique opportunity. It is the guardian of unrivalled contexts for artists to work in through the physical forests it stewards. Its teams have also developed a valuable knowledge bank of skills, science and perspectives through their work. We will be looking for ideas that engage with this depth of context and the opportunities it could present. This initiative is also willing to take a risk. We are looking for strong ideas, not necessarily proven experience of working on this scale or in this context. Through this new partnership, we can provide the right support for an artist to make a leap in their practice.” Shonagh Manson, Director, Jerwood Charitable Foundation “This is the first time ever that we have invited artists to respond to the forests across England that the Forestry Commission manages. We are hugely excited to see how artists might respond to this open invitation. There are no constraints on the type of proposal that we are looking for; we are looking for projects that really connect with this unique opportunity.” Hayley Skipper, Curator of Arts Development, Forestry Commission England Jerwood Open Forest is open for applications. Deadline for applications: 26 May 2013 RAMDOM Association and Arthub Asia present:
Call for Applications: DEFAULT 13: Art, Cities and Regeneration. Asia - Europe. Masterclass in residence. Lecce, Italy, 17th -26th September 2013 DEFAULT 13 Masterclass residency in Lecce (Southern Italy) focuses on the role and perspectives of public art and its implications for the social, urban context as a tool for socio-cultural transformation. Eighteen creatives and artists (9 from Asia and 9 from Europe), selected through an international open call, will be given the opportunity to discuss and try to answer the question "What is next in art, cities and regeneration?" For ten days, participants will develop their research approach in intensive workshops and seminar sessions, they will expand their networks and exchange know-how with the support of a residency curator, and they will meet international leading curators, artists, art managers and representatives of cultural and artistic organisations from both Europe and Asia. How do we interact within the framework of broader governmental policies concerning urban regeneration? How can we tackle the increasingly politicised policies that underpin cultural endeavours in revitalising urban centres and neighbourhoods? Do artists, curators and art managers have to default to the increasingly unfeasible regeneration practices entrenched in cultural structures because there are no alternatives given? The project was born at a time when art workers, policy makers and cultural managers are confronted with mass funding cuts in the public sector. As the art and cultural communities face the disappearance of cultural regeneration projects, DEFAULT 13 proposes to face the uncertain future of such projects. In attempt to deepen Western and Eastern perspectives on artistic and cultural practices, DEFAULT 13 aims to build a bridge between Europe and Asia involving artists and professionals from diverse cultural backgrounds within debates about culture and artistic production. The Masterclass will increase the possibilities in which people can create art by sharing ideas and experiences in order to develop and nurture new collaborations and networks. The works will take places at Manifatture Knos and other regenerated spaces in the city of Lecce. Call for applications: 28th March - 26th May 2013 At least one of the best artistic proposals will be realised after the Masterclass. A publication documenting the Masterclass and individual artist projects will be edited afterwards as well. Works will be in English. HOW TO APPLY and ADMISSION CRITERIA Applying artists are asked to submit a short project on proposal that addresses the question "what's next in art, cities and regeneration?" His practice has consistently addressed the representation of landscape, territoriality, history and the rhetoric of identity; exploring their relationship to memory and subjectivity and showing such issues as contested and conflicted. Proposing new forms of life and living with media Application term: March 1–15, 2013 The Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] opened in November 2003 as a platform for creating novel forms of artistic expression dealing with media technology and the human body. YCAM and its unique production system centered around the YCAM InterLab team has become a hub for creation and communication, expanding the realm of art/media/body expression, and connecting the region to the world. The YCAM 10th Anniversary Program was put together with the aim to indicate further developments as an evolving art center, with the numerous creative endeavors we have been engaging in from the beginning as a foundation. As commemoration of our 10th Anniversary, we start our first-ever public competition for our 10th Anniversary Program this year to meet emerging talents. We call for proposals exploring possible future ways of life and lifestyles that, with such concepts as "shared," "nomadic" or "mobile," keep changing in recent years. The 2011 earthquake generated a striking diversity in terms of information acquisition and editing skills, and at the same time, inspired us to question ways of forging direct relationships with society and local communities as bases for living. Take this opportunity to realize ideas to work as continuous platforms for seeking in the concepts of media possible answers to fundamental investigations into life and lifestyle that have recently come under review. Excellent plans will be realized through a two- to three-month residency. This competition is open to all ages and nationalities regardless of career or background. http://10th.ycam.jp/lifemedia http://re-marks.ycam.jp/ Venue information and dates: Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media [YCAM] July 6–September 1 / November 1–December 1, 2013 Fellowships 2013–2015: Vera List Center for Art and Politics, NYC
Call for Applications Deadline: April 8, 2013 The Vera List Center for Art and Politics is pleased to invite applications for the 2013–2015 Vera List Center Fellowships. Two fellowships will be awarded, each spanning eight months and linked to the Vera List Center's curatorial focus theme for 2013–2015, Alignment. The Vera List Center Fellowships honor individuals whose work advances the discourse on art and politics. The fellowships provide the opportunity to further develop such work drawing from the resources of The New School, to expand on it in collaboration with students and classes, and to bring it to the public through the Vera List Center's interdisciplinary public programs. The center's initiatives evolve around curatorial topics of particular urgency and broad resonance. In 2013–2015, the topic will be Alignment, usually referred to as the “proper or desirable relation of components.” With distinctions blurring between nature and culture, individual and group, and political and economic spheres, we will explore how alignments take place, and why. Art will provide the transdisciplinary lens for such an examination of alignments or correspondences. Over the course of four semesters, Alignment will be dissected and thematic program clusters will be formed around topics such as ecology; boycott, refusal and withdrawal; and ad hoc communities. The Vera List Center Fellows contribute to the intellectual foundation of the center, and through their fellowship projects advance the understanding of the focus theme. The fellowship is part-time, non-residential, and carries a 10,000 USD stipend. Fellows are supported with a research assistant, they have access to a wide range of activities throughout The New School, and enjoy extended library privileges. Meetings and informal gatherings with New School faculty and other constituencies are organized throughout the year. Eligibility Journalists, historians, visual and performing artists, critics, curators, and cultural practitioners working in any field where they engage art and politics. The New School is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution and encourages applications from minority candidates as well as from individuals without institutional affiliation. Considerations Artistic and/or scholarly excellence of fellowship proposal project. Significance of project to the candidate's long-term practice. Does the proposal relate to the focus theme in explicit and creative ways? Does the fellowship project reflect or benefit from the association with The New School? Timeline April 8, 2013 – Initial application due, followed by reviews by members of the VLC staff, the VLC Advisory Committee, past Fellows and New School faculty. Mid-April to early May – Finalists are invited to expand on their proposals. Late May – Announcement of fellowship appointments. Fellowship terms: ten months at any point between fall of 2013 and spring of 2015. OPEN SUBMISSIONS DEADLINE: 31st March 2013 Submit for only £15 Theme: Spectacle Submissions are now being accepted for Belfast Photo Festivals Open Exhibition based under the broad theme ‘Spectacle.’ This will be a major highlight and form an integral part of the 2013 programme, with a possible tour. Throughout history ‘Spectacle’s create visually stimulating and enthralling trappings that continue to capture the attention of mankind, manifesting in many forms both natural and man-made. Our broad definition includes spectacle in otherness, suffering, death, beauty, decay and subjects that are enlivened by the act or process of photography itself, as well as our desire for the visually enticing image, that moment which excites, exhilarates and entices the curiosity of the viewer. Recognising that ‘Spectacle’ sits at the very heart of photography’s identity and history, we invite photographers to submit photographic projects that interrogate, challenge and extend notions of visual spectacle. The second edition of Belfast Photo Festival aims to explore the manner in which photographers have photographed ‘Spectacles’ in their many forms, seizing the opportunity to record their intense visual impact, demonstrating the fundamental relationship between the ‘Spectacle’, its viewer and photography itself. Open Submission welcomes entries from professional, student and amateur photographers both nationally and internationally, being keen to support all disciplines of photographic practice. Photographers selected will benefit from: •Exhibition exposure in Belfast (UK) and Cobh (Republic of Ireland) •Exhibition alongside some of the biggest photographic names as part of a major photographic event •Publication and promotion through the Festival and its international partners •Being seen by visual arts professionals and the media •Being included within a promotional reach in excess of 6 million people JURY - Alec Soth (Magnum Photographer) - Brett Rodgers (Director, The Photographers Gallery) - Donovan Wylie (Magnum Photographer) - Paul Seawright (Head of Art, University of Ulster) To submit and for more information visit: www.belfastphotofestival.com 2013–14 curator residencies - Fogo Island Arts, CanadaCall for Proposals
Deadline: June 1, 2013 Application fee: none For its 2013–14 residencies, Fogo Island Arts is seeking proposals from curators for projects to be presented within the context of the organization’s Education Program. For more information contact info(@)fogoislandarts.ca. Deadline: June 1, 2013, for residencies starting September 1st, 2013. Fogo Island Arts and its parent organization, the Shorefast Foundation, believe that the arts play a key role in helping to secure the future sustainability of Fogo Island and Change Islands, located off the northeast coast of Newfoundland in Canada. Led by Strategic Director Nicolaus Schafhausen, Fogo Island Arts pursues this vision with a multifaceted approach. Fogo Island Arts Residencies provide opportunities for artists and thinkers from a wide range of disciplines to live and work on Fogo Island for varying periods of time. All artists-in-residence live in heritage houses and work in one of four off-the-grid studios designed by architect Todd Saunders. Situated at different locations around the island, the studios and artists’ homes help connect artists-in-residence with the day-to-day lives of the Island’s local communities. Artists-in-residence often undertake collaborations with Island residents. Recent projects have included films made with the participation of Fogo Islanders, and international designers and local craftspeople working together to create furniture designs informed by Outport ways of life. In many cases, these Design Initiatives are a source of income generation for artists, designers and the Island’s communities, helping to fulfill the social enterprise mission of the Shorefast Foundation and Fogo Island Arts. Selected artists-in-residence present their work in the Fogo Island Gallery. A purpose-built 1200 square foot contemporary art space, the Gallery is housed in the Fogo Island Inn, opening in March 2013 with an exhibition by the New Zealand artist Kate Newby. Exhibitions at the Gallery provide an important opportunity for artists to share their work with the local community and international audiences. Our Publications program, created in collaboration with Sternberg Press (Berlin) creates a further discursive context for Gallery exhibitions. The Fogo Island Dialogues are a roving series of conferences, held on Fogo Island and other locations. Featuring leading thinkers in their respective fields, the Dialogues address critical questions faced by the global community in the 21st century. The initial series of conferences, scheduled for July 2013, looks at the topic of “the livelihood and renewal of remote communities.” Further Information: http://www.fogoislandarts.ca http://www.fogoislandinn.ca http://www.shorefast.org Fogo Island Arts Highway 334 – Suite 100 P.O. It provides space for projections, interactive installations and animated computer art. In the recent years established artists, like Carsten Nicolai, Christoph Giradet or Tobias Rehberger, as well as young talents have all been part of vkunst. CALL FOR ENTRIES Deadline for Submissions: March 11, 2013 Submission fee: $12 per work An International Competitive Exhibit Exploring Movement in Art (or design) Seeking kinetic works as well as non-kinetic works representing movement All artists included in the project receive a complimentary copy of the full-color companion exhibit catalog. Sometimes we take movement for granted. The fact that the Earth is rotating at 1000 miles per hour, or hurtling through space around the sun at 67,000 miles per hour goes practically unnoticed by everyone, except perhaps when one stops to appreciate just why the sun rises and sets, or why we experience seasons. Yet everything about our lives, and life on Earth, is inextricably linked to movement of one form or another. In honor of the phenomenon of transitioning through space, relative location, and action (and reaction), Manifest invites artists, designers, and engineers to submit works to this competitive juried gallery exhibit which incorporate literal movement (kinetic in one form or another), as well as non-moving works that depict or are clearly about physical movement. Manifest is eager to present and document a broadly compelling exhibition, a collection of works featuring movement as their common theme, and to discover just how artists address movement in works of art or design today. Eligibility: KINETICA is open to everyone. Professionals as well as students are encouraged to enter. Open to artists, designers, engineers, inventors, etc. The only limitation is that entries must represent original works of art, design, or engineering. Media: Manifest will consider any work that can reasonably be understood to either 1) incorporate literal movement as part of its form (moving parts, whether mechanical, automated, human-powered, etc.), or 2) depict or in some other way include movement as a subject or theme of otherwise non-moving and non-kinetic art. Sculpture, painting, drawing, assemblage, printmaking, photography, video, etc., are all possibly valid media. There are no media restrictions other than that the submissions must be 'visual art', design, engineering, or a combination of scientific/artistic creations. There are no size restrictions beyond what can fit into Manifest's gallery spaces. A general floor plan is available here. DEADLINE: March 11, 2013 SUBMIT HERE: http://www.manifestgallery.org/kinetica Questions? email [email protected] Alberta College of Art + Design - Visiting Artist - CeramicsVisiting Artist (VA)/Instructor/Researcher - Ceramics

Deadline: 31 March 2013 Application fee: none The École Nationale Supérieure d'Art (ENSA) in Bourges provides its students with generous workspaces and technical facilities that are regularly modernised and re-equipped. It offers a Masters in Visual Arts that puts the emphasis on inventiveness and creativity. La Box is one of the school's main educative tools, and every year it organises ten exhibitions by artists from France and elsewhere. For the last eight years, it has been entrusting part of its programme to young curators over the course of an academic year, chosen and monitored by members of the School's teaching team—Arnaud Deshayes, Ingrid Luche and Hervé Trioreau in 2012–13. Moreover, for twenty years now, ENSA has been providing residencies, with the backing of the Regional Cultural Affairs Office (DRAC) and France's Centre Region. These residencies are intended to give young artists from France and other countries the chance to carry out personal research projects in association with the school, its teachers, its students and any other outside partner of their choice. Call for a curatorial project Part of the programme for the 2013–14 season will be entrusted to an independent curator, a critic or a collective whose curatorial project has been chosen by La Box's selection panel. The final proposal should lay down the project's structure and time frame before the end of June 2013, when timetabling of the exhibitions for the following season will take place. The project's experimental character will be one of the main selection criteria. As part of the School's teaching context, the programme should include the presence and participation of the students in workshops extending from the designing of the exhibitions through to their actual presentation. The curator(s) should also choose and implement a liaison approach aimed at an outside audience. The overall budget is 25,000 euros. Of this 20,000 euros will be devoted to production and transport of works, travel and accommodation expenses for the artists, travel expenses for the curator(s), communication, publications; the remaining 5000 euros will cover miscellaneous expenses for the curator(s). Candidates must be aware that this kind of programme demands considerable availability on their part. Attendance at regular on-site meetings—including the project validation and organisation meeting in June 2013—is indispensable. In addition, ready responsiveness by phone or email is vital during preparation of the programme. The curator must be present during the setting up and opening of exhibitions. In the case of a collective, dialogue and coordination between the members is essential so as to avoid all contradictions in their dealings with the School and La Box. Terms and conditions Draft projects must be presented using the following form, downloaded and filled out. They should be sent by email to [email protected], marked for the attention of Chloé Nicolas. Closing date for applications: 31 March 2013 The short list will be drawn up in April 2013. Interviewing and selection of shortlisted candidates will take place in May 2013. Prior to this they will be asked to provide further details of their projects. The theme is meant only as a prompt, and is open to interpretation by each artist. GHost-dance: ghosts as cultural and political movement (London)
GHost-dance: ghosts as cultural and political movement Deadline for submissions - 20th March Submission fee: none 'GHost-dance: ghosts as cultural and political movement' 'GHost' is seeking proposals from artists for thirty minute (max duration) performances, performative presentations for two interdisciplinary conferences - Hostings 11 & Hostings 12 at CSM, University of the Arts, Granary Building, 1 Granary Square, London, N1C 4AA Dates: 'Hostings 11' 17th April, 6pm - 9pm – LVMH Lecture Theatre 'Hostings 12' 21st May, 6pm – 9pm – Studio Theatre (dance and performance space) Deadline for submissions - 20th March Please send a (working) title and an abstract of approximately 300 words, a brief biography and, if applicable, a couple of photographs or links to film clips documenting performance or dance. send to GHost at: [email protected] Submissions may address, but not be restricted to, one or more of the following: Ghosts as a political or cultural voice within marginalised or disenfranchised communities. The embodying of ghosts within ritual and performance to instigate socio-cultural or political change. Ghosts as a healing and unifying presence within marginalised cultural groups or genders. The appropriation of the ghost-dance, and other forms of spirit–possession, within contemporary art. The ghost narrative as a political device within rhetoric, writing, film, visual art or popular culture “Standing on the hill where so many people were buried in a common grave, standing there in that cold darkness under the stars, I felt tears running down my face. I can’t describe what I felt. I heard the voices of the long-dead ghost dancers crying out to us.” (Leonard Crow Dog, during the American Indian Movement’s occupation of Wounded Knee, 1973). In the last decades of the nineteenth century, self proclaimed prophet Wovoka, of the Paiute people, became the figure-head for the Ghost Dance - a religious movement adopted by a significant number of the Native American Nations. Central to this belief was a communal ritualised dance, inducing a trance state, in which it was believed the souls of the dead and living would be reunited and their land returned to them. In the 1970s the Ghost Dance was revived as part of the Red Power Movement, with the activists group AIM (American Indian Movement) at its forefront, fighting for Native American civil rights. The ghost in the Ghost Dance was a revitalising force for a people whose land and loved ones had been taken from them and who were facing cultural genocide. The Spiritualist movement in nineteenth century U.S.A provided a forum in which women, whose role in society was very much suppressed, could give voice to their opinions in a public arena. Appeals for women’s emancipation and the abolition of slavery could be expressed under the guise a ghost voice, allegedly channelled through the medium. At the same time in Europe, in the opening sentences of Marx and Engle’s Communist Manifesto, “A Spectre is haunting Europe – the spectre of Communism.” Communism could be said to have been conceptualised as a powerful ghostly presence, waiting to materialise and take shape within the living as a force for revolutionary change. As a visual arts and creative research project GHost takes on and explores the conceit of guests, hosts and ghosts, both metaphorically and practically, in its activities. Functioning in its capacity as a supporting platform (or host) GHost aims to enable invited guests to visually and conceptually manifest and interrogate the idea of the ghost. To date the project has had two central strands: a consideration of the relevance of ghosts in contemporary culture, centred around a programme of interdisciplinary seminars – so-called Hostings –previously held in Senate House at the University of London; and a series of exhibitions, screenings and performances designed to make manifest and, by extension, examine the aesthetics of ghosts and haunted spaces. www.host-a-ghost.blogspot.com www.ghosthostings.co.uk The Hostings are supported by the Centre for Performance at CSM, University of the Arts, London Canadian Artist Residency - Summer 2013Canadian Artist Residency - Summer 2013

Deadline: 18 March 2013 IMPAKT FESTIVAL 2013 30 October - 3 November CALL FOR FESTIVAL CURATORS to investigate this year's theme 'CAPITALISM CATCH-22' Impakt invites interested parties to submit curatorial proposals for the 2013 Impakt Festival, which will take place from 30 October to 3 November, focusing on the theme 'Capitalism Catch-22'. The Impakt Festival is the annual culmination of the activities of Impakt as an organisation that specialises in critical media culture: a multimedia festival with conferences, readings, performances, screenings, exhibitions, presentations and music. The curatorial proposal can be submitted by curators individually or collectively and should revolve around this year’s theme, 'Capitalism Catch-22'. Capitalism Catch-22 (working title) Many people argue that, so far, humanity hasn’t come up with any feasible alternatives to capitalism, whilst at the same time this economic system seems a dead end. With the world population increasing, imminent energy and natural resources crises and the growing complexity of financial structures, we want to study the future of capitalism as our society's basic principle, possible alternative systems, the role media culture plays in a market economy and how new technologies and small scale initiatives can offer solutions. We expect curator(s) to present a clear vision on the above issues in order to investigate and analyse both past and future structures using the programmes they curate for the 2013 Impakt Festival. The curator or curatorial team can be responsible for the entire festival programme comprising films, lectures, new media projects, presentations, a music programme and an exhibition. It is also possible to submit a proposal for one or several parts of the festival programme. Deadline for festival programme proposals: 18 March 2013 For more information on the festival theme, the programme structure and submission guidelines, please see www.impakt.nl Impakt Works 2013: call for residency proposalsImpakt Works 2013: call for residency proposals

Paid by host: DordtYart provides a residence in which meals and a compensation for daily expenses are included. Travel costs to and from the Netherlands are not included, but may be negotiated in exceptional cases, at the discretion of the hosts. There are possibilities to receive a fee; the amount of this fee depends on the work of art that will be realized. Materials and technical assistance will be provided by DordtYart and the site specific work of art will be removed after the exhibition, therefore the investment in the work of art is strongly limited. If a work of art is transportable, the work of art remains the property of the artist who will transport the work of art after the exhibition, or the work of art is the joint ownership of DordtYart and the artist. Depending on the made agreements on the destination and the ownership of the work of art, compensation is available for investment in the work of art. Deadline: March 31, 2013 Application fee: none In keeping with its main objective, the Allianz Kulturstiftung supports broadly conceived educational and cultural projects, which benefit the European integration process and encourage the development of a European identity. An important target group for the foundation’s work is the new generation of scholars and artists for whom the foundation has developed a series of exchange and encounter-related projects. The Criteria The Allianz Cultural Foundation addresses primarily exceptionally gifted young academics and artists in Europe. In particular, we support cooperative projects with involved partners from at least three countries. In addition to the required artistic, academic or respectively educational quality, the project application has to point out, that the participating project partners share the financial and thematic responsibility and cooperate at eye level. Special attention is paid to projects, which enable long-term networks between the involved artists and project partners. Hence the Allianz Cultural Foundation only supports projects but no institutions. The Allianz Cultural Foundation focuses on particular regions within Europe. Aside from the countries of Central and South-eastern Europe the focal point of the next years lies on the Mediterranean area. The criteria for funding focus on contemporary concepts of every genre and media which prove new ideas in the arts, culture and education. The projects may also be workshops, whereas the active knowledge transfer and the exchange of experiences between the participants are valued just as the result itself. Furthermore, sponsored projects should on the long run appeal to a larger audience than only professionals. Project applications – the most important at a glance Applications for projects in 2014 have to be handed in at the Allianz Cultural Foundation on March 31, 2013, at the latest. Please send your applications via email as well as via mail. The application should not include more than five pages. Further information and Submission Form: www.thelondongroup.com Salzburg International Summer Academy - Tuition Grants available22 July–31 August 2013
Deadline: 10 April 2013 Application fee: none Grants Some 90 grants, usually covering tuition costs only, are available for participation in one of the courses at the Summer Academy. Only grants by the American Austrian Foundation (AAF), ERSTE Foundation, Free State of Bavaria, and Münster Academy of Fine Arts offer additional subsidies for travel and living costs. More info http://www.summeracademy.at/Grants_94.html About the Summer Academy Programme The 2013 programme is diverse and multifaceted, ranging from stone sculpture to media art, from "arte útil" (useful art) to jewellery design and on to curatorial practice. The focus is on exploration, defining and interpreting the terrain where art is produced, presented and communicated—as well as on the inevitable disillusionment that occasionally arises, and the subsequent re-enchantment. Students will be given assistance in discovering their own artistic cosmos and creating scope for development. The 21 courses of between one and four weeks are held in three locations: Hohensalzburg Fortress, the old salt factory (Alte Saline) in Hallein and the Kiefer quarry in Fürstenbrunn. Highlights Figuration or abstraction? The painter Norbert Bisky takes students into the field of tension between the two. The contrast between precise reproduction and free expression is seen here as a valuable extension of the possibilities offered by painting. In his painting course, Hubert Scheibl, who is presenting a solo exhibition in the Salzburg Museum of Modern Art from 20 July until 20 October 2013, will examine how popular media such as film and music can influence painting. Photographer Katharina Sieverding returns, and a photography course is also offered by Paolo Woods, who works as a documentary photographer in various conflict regions (currently Haiti) for Time, Newsweek, Le Monde, Geo and other international publications, and has also enjoyed success in numerous exhibitions. His course is devoted to the question of how photography can tell stories. The Russian artist Olga Chernysheva is known for her lyrical investigations of individuality within a society in upheaval. Her course focuses on working out one's own artistic landscape, which may be expressed in a variety of media. Robert Kuśmirowski—generally called a "genius of fake"—meticulously replicates entire situations, rooms or landscapes. His students will use specified materials and situations to work out new sculptural perspectives. Christoph Draeger takes everyday objects as the basic materials for his course. By means of collages and assemblages, the students will explore how the meaning of these objects can be altered when they are placed in different contexts. In her workshop, Tania Bruguera concentrates on the question of what actual social and political effects can be achieved through art. Further artists and curators are Nancy Adajania, Shaina Anand/Ashok Sukumaran, Sarnath Banerjee, Leya Mira Brander, Charlotte Cullinan, Milena Dragicevic, Bassam El Baroni, Felix Gmelin, Hanspeter Hofmann, Thomas Kilpper, Mara Mattuschka, Lucy Sarneel, and Schälling|Enderle. Regular application The high quality of the courses is guaranteed by the requirement that all prospective participants must apply for acceptance. On the basis of the submitted dossier, the teachers select participants. The fees are between EUR 430 and 1,120, depending on the duration of the course. Students are entitled to a reduced fee. Closing date for applications for courses is 15 May 2013. If numbers allow, later applications may be considered. Rhôd 2013 – Future Nature Culture (Wales)Rhôd 2013 – Future Nature Culture
Exhibition and Residency DEADLINE: 24th February 2013 Call for Expressions of Interest from Artists for Exhibition and Residency to take place in May / June 2013. DEADLINE: 24th February 2013 Rhôd is an artist-run project exploring and promoting urban-rural dialogue. Taking it’s name from the sixteenth century water-mill in which it is based (rhôd is Welsh for water-wheel), the project involves an annual exhibition held in the building and grounds of Melin Glonc, in Drefelin, Carmarthenshire. The emphasis of Rhôd is on the creation of new site-specific artworks in a variety of media, including sculpture, installation, performance, sonic art, relational / participatory art, and video. Future Nature Culture The theme of the exhibition addresses the critical need for us to respond with intelligence, sensitivity and creativity to the challenges posed by the unprecedented impact of human civilization upon the natural world. The demands of over-population and a globalized market economy have resulted in damage to eco-systems, diminishing biodiversity, the depletion of natural resources, and climate change. Growing understanding of interconnectivity and the fragility of equilibrium within complex interdependent systems suggests that we acquire a global perspective in our willingness to engage with the dilemmas we now face. Future Nature Culture will invite the selected artists to visit Melin Glonc to understand the setting for their responses to the current ecological context which challenges us to re-interpret and re-imagine the relationship between nature and culture, beyond exploitation and idealization, towards a future of respect, reciprocity and responsibility. Future Nature Culture will be Rhôd’s fifth annual exhibition. 1 million GBP initiative Deadline: 29 April 2013 Application fee: none 'Artangel lets artists do what no one else will. It's as simple as that.' – Jeremy Deller Artangel and BBC Radio 4 have launched a new Open for artists anywhere in the UK: a call for artists working in any media to share with Artangel and BBC Radio 4 proposals for ground-breaking projects that will transform the UK's cultural landscape. Previous Artangel Open calls have led to some of the most iconic projects of the past decade—Michael Landy’s Break Down, the very public destruction in a department store on Oxford Street of absolutely everything the artist owned; Jeremy Deller's The Battle of Orgreave in South Yorkshire, the re-enactment of a dark day in the conflict between police and colliery workers during the 1984 Miners' Strike; Roger Hiorns's Seizure, the brilliant blue crystal council flat in South London; and Clio Barnard's award-winning film The Arbor, shot on the Buttershaw Estate in Bradford. James Lingwood and Michael Morris, Artangel Co-Directors, say: 'Artangel is adamant that nothing potentially exceptional should be thought of as impossible. It’s the right time for artists to be as ambitious as possible and for Artangel to be as open as possible. Some remarkable new art in extraordinary places will come out of Open and we're delighted to be collaborating with Radio 4.' To mark the new alliance of Artangel and BBC Radio 4, five artists including Christian Marclay and Susan Hiller will participate in Open Air, a series of short pieces scheduled for broadcast immediately after Radio 4's Today programme from 25–29 March 2013. 12 Open Platforms for artists across the UK are being hosted by some of the UK’s leading arts organisations in cities including Belfast, Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester and Newcastle between January 28 and February 26. The Platforms are an opportunity to meet Artangel Co-Directors James Lingwood and Michael Morris and artists including Barnard, Deller, Hiorns and Landy. Open proposals are encouraged from visual artists, filmmakers, writers, composers, theatre makers, choreographers and producers as well as artists working in the digital space. The closing date for 2013 Open submissions is Monday 29 April. Shortlisted artists will have the opportunity to meet and develop their proposals with Open Mentors. A range of influential cultural figures including Andrea Arnold, Felix Barrett, Adam Curtis, Tacita Dean, Ryan Gander, Rachel Whiteread and Penny Woolcock have made themselves available as Open Mentors. In June the first Open commissions will be chosen by a selection panel including James Lingwood and Michael Morris, Tony Phillips, Arts Commissioning Editor at Radio 4, Clio Barnard and Roger Hiorns. They will be announced in June and presented between 2014 and 2015 http://www.artangel.org.uk/open Open Cube at White Cube Mason’s Yard, London
Call for entries: Open Cube Curated by Adriano Pedrosa Deadline: 28 February 2013 Application fee: none Leading contemporary art gallery White Cube has invited São Paulo-based curator Adriano Pedrosa to curate an exhibition at their Mason's Yard gallery, London, in July 2013. Pedrosa's project, titled Open Cube, will attempt to infiltrate the hierarchies of the gallery system by inviting any interested artists to submit works to be included in the exhibition. By opening up the selection process, Pedrosa wishes to unsettle the system of gallery practices, initiating a dialogue with artists that might not have access to this network. Shortlisted artists must be available for interviews in London with Adriano Pedrosa in March and April. A comprehensive catalogue with texts by Pedrosa will accompany the exhibition. Adriano Pedrosa is an independent curator, editor, and writer currently based in São Paulo. He has curated numerous international exhibitions and was adjunct curator of the 24th Bienal de São Paulo (1998, with chief curator Paulo Herkenhoff), co-curator of the 27th Bienal de São Paulo (2006, with chief curator Lisette Lagnado) and co-curator of the 12th Istanbul Biennial (2011, with Jens Hoffmann). He has published extensively on contemporary art in numerous catalogues and magazines, and is the founding director of PIESP—Programa Independente da Escola São Paulo. Anonymous Drawings 2013 / Exhibition Deadline for submissions: January 31 (postmark) Application fees: none Call for submissions: Drawings of international artists will be presented anonymously in an exhibition at the Uferhallen Berlin in March 2013. The exhibition is preceded by an open call for participation on the Internet. 800 works will be selected for the exhibition. There are no specifications regarding the content of the drawings. The age, biography or gender of the participants will not be requested and do not play any role in the selection. The only formal rule: the maximum size of the exhibited drawings is 29,70 - 42,00 cm (A3). All the drawings are available for a symbolic unit sales-price of 150 Euro each. For each drawing sold, the artists receive 100 Euro - the rest will be used for the partial financing of the project. CODE D. (new media) An International Competitive Exhibit of Works of New Media DEADLINE: January 28, 2013 Entry fee: $10 All artists included in the project receive a complimentary copy of the full-color companion exhibit catalog. Art and Science are intertwined throughout history. New media in art arise from a variety of places– sometimes the artist's lab, sometimes the scientist's and engineer's, and other times from someplace completely unexpected. Inevitably this is driven by curiosity, a need for new means of expressing complex ideas, and often enough the simple desire to create something novel. As part of its ongoing effort to survey various approaches to art making, expression, and creative discovery Manifest offers CODE D. as an invitation to artists to share works of New Media. We have no predetermined expectations for what constitutes 'new' media. While the title of the project plays off the concept of the digital, that is by no means the defining parameter for works to be considered. Works submitted to this peer-juried exhibit may be of any media, style, or genre, and may represent New Media in any number of widely interpreted ways. Manifest is eager to present and document a broadly compelling exhibition, a collection of works of New Media revealing the excitement, mystery, and intellect behind the leading edge of creativity in the world today. Eligibility: CODE D. is open to everyone. Professionals as well as students are encouraged to enter. The only limitation is that entries must represent original works of art. Media: Manifest is taking a wide view of what constitutes New Media. Our project stems from our question of 'what is New Media art?' as opposed to a statement that 'this is new media art.' Some examples of things we already consider to fit within the parameters of this project are: digital photography/video, automated or self-generating art, electronic interactive 2d or 3d art, video paintings, works that combine new media with old media, etc. The wikipedia entry for New Media Art provides a basis for some understanding, but also does not limit the potential for viable work for this project. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_media) DEADLINE: January 28, 2013 SUBMIT HERE: http://www.manifestgallery.org/coded Questions? email [email protected] Call for submissions: Academy of the Arts of the World, Cologne

Open-call for 100 Painters of Tomorrow, published by Thames & Hudson Deadline: 15 March 2013 Submission fee: £10GBP Painting is enjoying a remarkable creative renaissance in the 21st century, with many of the world’s leading artists now working in this most enduring and seductive of media. 100 Painters of Tomorrow is an ambitious new project, initiated by curator and gallerist Kurt Beers and the publishers Thames & Hudson, to find the 100 most exciting painters at work today. Culminating in a major publication that will introduce and present each artist and their work, creating a snapshot of the best new talent in painting from across the globe, submissions are invited from artists via this website from 15 January – 15 March 2013. The open call submission is international and open to any artist who uses paint as their primary medium. There is no age limit for entry, but each of the selected artists will have gained professional recognition in the last five years (that is, since 2008/9) through their education, gallery representation or in the production of a significant body of work (see Guidelines). In addition, more than 100 of the world’s leading art schools have been directly invited to participate, nominating recent graduates to submit their applications. Artists’ submissions will be judged by an international jury featuring some of the most prominent names in contemporary art, including the painter Cecily Brown, curators Sir Norman Rosenthal, Yuko Hasegawa, Gregor Muir and Suzanne Cotter, and writer-critics Suzanne Hudson, Philip Tinari, Tony Godfrey and Barry Schwabsky. 100 Painters of Tomorrow will be edited by Kurt Beers and will be published by Thames & Hudson in 2014 and accompanied by a major exhibition of contemporary painting at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts. The publication will feature texts giving essential biographical information on these rising stars, accompanied by quotations from the artists themselves, providing personal insights into their thinking and practice. Lavishly illustrated with more than 300 colour images, it will be the intelligent and definitive guide to the outstanding painters of the future. XXXIII Konkurs na Wydarzenie Muzealne Roku Sybilla Jednym z najważniejszych zadań statutowych Narodowego Instytutu Muzealnictwa i Ochrony Zbiorów jest prowadzenie Konkursu o Nagrodę Ministra Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego – Wydarzenie Muzealne Roku SYBILLA. Do końca lutego 2013 trwa nabór zgłoszeń do kolejnej, XXXIII edycji Konkursu. |
