Jerwood Encounters: 3-PhaseJerwood Encounters: 3-Phase
A project by Eastside Projects, Birmingham; g39, Cardiff; and Jerwood Visual Arts, London Deadline: 15 September 2014 Membership to ESP or WARP required Jerwood Encounters: 3-Phase is a new commissioning project that aims to set up a space of encounter between the developing bodies of work and thinking of two artists and three visual arts organisations. Opportunity This is an exhibition and development opportunity for two early career artists to make and exhibit new work, with curatorial and practical support from Eastside Projects (Birmingham), g39 (Cardiff) and Jerwood Visual Arts (London). Each artist will develop solo shows for the second gallery at Eastside Projects and Unit #1 g39 and present work in a two person exhibition at Jerwood Visual Arts, London. One artist will be recruited through Eastside Projects’ Extra Special People associates scheme, and one artist will be recruited through g39’s WARP programme. You must be part of one of these networks to apply. Who is it for? Artists applying must be part of the Extra Special People or WARP networks. You can make work in any media. You must be living and working outside London. Selected artists will be in the process of establishing their careers, but will not yet have had significant opportunities to show work outside their home region. We are looking for those who will benefit the most from the exhibition opportunities, developmental support and dialogue on offer. What is on offer? Each artist will receive: A solo exhibition at Eastside Projects in January or March 2015. An exhibition at Jerwood Visual Arts (showing alongside the other selected artist) in May 2015. A solo exhibition at g39 in September or October 2015. A fee of £1,700 and up to £3,200 for exhibition production and £250 for travel costs. Mentoring and practical support from Eastside Projects, Jerwood Visual Arts and g39. A publication will be produced for the project and, in discussion with the artist, a writer will be engaged to write on or around each artist’s work. The Jerwood Visual Arts’ writer in residence will also write about the exhibition for the Jerwood Visual Arts blog. An events programme will run alongside the exhibitions. What are we Looking for? Ambition, compelling ideas and a commitment to developing an outstanding art practice. You are invited to propose how, through this opportunity, you might achieve what has previously been just out of reach; how the project will enable you to crystallise your current research, focus your practice and develop your work and career. Proposals should identify what would make the difference for you at this point and how the opportunity will enable a breakthrough in your practice. The exhibitions should be seen as an opportunity to test out ideas and bring into reality the next stage of your development, with the support of Eastside Projects, g39 and Jerwood Visual Arts throughout. Selection Process Artists should apply directly to Eastside Projects or g39, depending on the network you are a part of. All proposals will then be reviewed by a panel, which will include representatives from Eastside Projects, g39 and Jerwood Visual Arts. Following this, shortlisted artists will be invited to an interview. From these interviews one artist/collaborative practice from each network will be selected. How to apply You should make your application directly to either Eastside Projects or g39; artists can apply once as an individual and once as part of a collaborative practice. Applications should be made by email to: [email protected] or [email protected] Applications should include: 1. Your name, contact details (email, address, telephone number and website address). 2. Eastside Projects: www.eastsideprojects.org Eastside Projects makes art public g39: www.g39.org g39 is an artist-run gallery in the centre of Cardiff, Wales’ capital city. The organisation recently relocated from a narrow three storey building where it originated, to an expansive warehouse. The gallery curates between six and eight exhibitions per year and often hosts events in the interim weeks and in addition works in offsite locations for individual projects. The organisation runs Wales Artist Resource Programme – WARP - an open-access resource and training space for artists. g39 focuses on contemporary work and consciously programmes a mix of work from Wales with work from further afield, placing work by established names alongside work by emerging or lesser known artists. The focus is on experimentation and risk and g39 aims to provide the opportunities to showcase new work rather than relying on selling. Jerwood Visual Arts: www.jerwoodvisualarts.org Jerwood Visual Arts is a contemporary gallery programme based at Jerwood Space, London and on tour across the UK. It is run and funded by Jerwood Charitable Foundation, often in partnership with organisations including Eastside Projects, g39, Film and Video Umbrella, Photoworks and Forestry Commission England. Through Jerwood Visual Arts we aim to provide an independent space focused first and foremost on artist development. We work with early career artists to commission and present new work and to take artistic risks, often trying something new for the first time. Central to the programme is the provision of meaningful budgets for commissioning and production, an excellent gallery team offering practical and curatorial support, and well-resourced press and marketing activity around each artist’s work. All of the projects we undertake begin with these principles and are then designed in response to current context and to what artists need and want. The Shape Open submission: [in]visible

FORMAT EXPOSURE OPEN CALL Deadline: 1 October 2014 Application fee: £15 “I believe in evidence. I believe in observation, measurement, and reasoning, confirmed by independent observers. I'll believe anything, no matter how wild and ridiculous, if there is evidence for it. The wilder and more ridiculous something is, however, the firmer and more solid the evidence will have to be.” - Isaac Asimov Photography was once considered the most accurate way to record truth. The photograph acted as a solid piece of evidence; indisputable proof of something, someone or somewhere. Since its discovery, photography has been employed as a silent witness to ideas, capturing events and representing a trace of the world. Today, every two minutes, we take as many photos as the entirety of humanity took during the 1800s. On a daily basis, we use photography to evidence our lives; routines, friends, meals, encounters. Millions of seemingly insignificant moments are recorded and shared online, creating inconclusive portraits of individuals, places and events. We can no longer consider a photograph an evidential document in every case. It can equally misrepresent reality as much as it reveals truths; questioning the historic phrase “the camera never lies”. We are interested in the evidence of your ideas, your lives and the lives of others, today and throughout history. We are inviting submissions which explore the boundaries of photography and its connection to our festival theme, EVIDENCE, in original and genuine ways. We are looking for submissions from across the medium of photography and beyond for the next edition of FORMAT International Photography Festival, taking place from 13th March – 12th April 2015, in Derby, UK. Submissions are welcome from artists/photographers, curators, collectives, archives, independent publishers and performers. There are opportunities to show different kinds of works: wall based, installation, public space, screen based, interactive, digital, participatory, workshop and event based. Tell us more in the application form! All we ask is that you connect with the theme and photography/still image. We are open to broad interpretations of the theme. Think openly about the definition of the theme and you are welcome to take it in any direction you think relates. Challenge us! The term ‘Boda-Boda’ is an adaptation of the word border and alludes to a cross border movement, suggesting physical mobility across lines that represent the divide of land and space universally. Teamed with ‘lounge’, the project seeks to engage questions of mobility and domesticities, and how these two notions are now being engaged in our personal spaces. Altogether, Boda-Boda Lounge project takes cognizance of the physical aspect of mobility, it attempts to engage with people’s private space and imagine the ways through which Africans on the continent, mostly middle-class, do have access to a space in which we are allowed to cross physical and imaginary lines/ borders through the use of the TV set normally located in the lounge room of the house; thus, providing context to the thinking as well as exhibition making within the context of the Boda-Boda Lounge video exhibition. Private space in many contexts represents an environment in which human beings reflect about their individual experiences comparatively to their interactions within public spaces - private space hence establishes room for intimate dialogues, activities and the opportunity to lounge and reconnect with their senses. Boda-Boda Lounge will attempt to reflect how people engage with their personal or private space looking at the influence of audio-visual sets in their lives in and out of private space. The Boda-Boda Lounge Project is a collaborative project between VANSA (South Africa), Picha (Congo DRC) and VAN Lagos (Nigeria). It intends to enable wide access for African artists to be part of the festival and to enable a wide range of African arts organizations to take part. It is an engagement with low cost, widely accessible exchange processes on the African Continent. Requirements: Who can submit? Itch Magazine 13 open for submissions
Itch 13 open for submissions with new theme and new editor Deadline: 1 September 2014 Application fee: none Itch magazine, the continent's most widely respected online creative journal, is pleased to call for for fresh work from writers, poets and visual artists for selection for its 13th issue, and to announce the appointment of a full-time editor. London-based writer and filmmaker, Elan Gamaker, joins the magazine to take up this important role. He explains that Itch, under the auspices of the School of Literature, Language and Media at the University of the Witwatersrand, has an increasingly global outlook. "While our base remains South Africa, we encourage writers and visual artists from around the world to contribute to what is rapidly becoming the pre-eminent publication of its kind in Africa," says Gamaker. "This being said, it is important to us that we maintain our financial independence and editorial integrity. This is why, in spite of recent changes, we exist entirely thanks to the contributions of our readers." Each issue of Itch is constructed through the selection of the best written and visual work submitted via the Itch website. The magazine aims to be free-thinking and user-driven and therefore contains no op-eds, reviews, blog entries and commissions. As with previous issues, potential contributors to Itch 13 are prompted by a theme. But, as Gamaker explains, this is only a guide, and variations on the theme in the broadest possible sense are welcomed. The theme for Itch 13 is DETECTION. Taken literally, detection means the search for something hidden or concealed, but it opens up a myriad possible interpretations. Since we welcome work from writers at every level of experience and across cultures, we hope to see many different responses to the theme. Those interested in contributing to Itch 13 have until 1 September to submit their work. Submissions can be made by visiting www.itchmagazine.org. Deadline for submissions: 1 September 2014 More details on our submissions page at http://www.itch.co.za/submit-an-article Contributors will have to register and log in to submit work. Please do not email your submission – you will be able to upload it at the interface at the above web address.
