Contemporary Art Fair NYC
October 24, 25 & 26, 2014 Deadline for applications: July 25th, 2014 The Contemporary Art Fair NYC launches its 5th edition in it’s new home in the beautiful Penn Plaza Pavilion in the heart of Midtown located in the Hotel Pennsylvania at 401 7th Ave, at 33rd Street. We are excited about the prospects for this high profile location for this October's fair! The mission of the fair is to create a space for extraordinary contemporary artists from around the world, and from here in New York City, to have their work seen, to be recognized in the arts critical forum, and to be purchased and collected. The fair distinguishes itself in essential ways... The Contemporary Art Fair NYC is specifically for individual artists, both independent and having gallery representation, and artist duos or other artists who work together. Artist groups or associations expressing a unified aesthetic program are also welcome. Arts organizations that are non-traditional (gallery) spaces or not-for-profit spaces, and the like, may also apply under limited terms. (As the fair does not exclude artists who have gallery representation, galleries will be very welcome to have representatives on hand at the fair on behalf of any artist they represent who is participating in the fair. These gallery representatives will have fair badges provided and will also be able to offer their clients a limited number of complimentary fair passes, as well.) The Contemporary Art Fair NYC welcomes artists working in the following mediums to apply: Painters, print makers and graphic artists (under limited terms), photographers working or printing in all forms including digital, digital media artists (not inclusive of video or other forms of equipment based art work), drawing, collage, and sculptors, including construction and assemblage, and more. A Special Section of the fair will be formed for all fine and illustrative artists who might find their co-equals in the pages of Hi-Fructose or Juxtapoz magazines or who might find their co-equals represented by such galleries as La Luz de Jesus or Jonathan Levine Gallery, also including anime, manga, otaku, comics, skateboard, tattoo, Street Art, and Steampunk, to name but a few. The fair provides quality space at less than one third of the cost of other venues. Significantly less than galleries pay in a similar venue. Also, the fair welcomes artists who might care to share a booth with other artists. Wall prices are very reasonable, as well. In addition an award of a two week residency in the gallery will be made to an artist chosen by the curator and announced at the opening on the 15th July 2014. Deadline: Midnight 10 July 2014 Fee: No Application Fee FOR FURTHER INFO AND TO APPLY GO TO: http://rufusstone.submittable.com/submit This is a new London-based residency, of four weeks, suitable for self-directed and/or research based projects, open to artists at any stage in their career in any medium (including but not limited to visual art, writing, video, movement, performance, social practice etc.). We are especially interested in working with artists who have strategies for reaching audiences without the mediation of traditional institutions or structures. We are looking for artists who would prefer to have a straightforward connection to society without having their work regarded as mere craft. We wish to support and learn from artists looking “to produce a different kind of art” who realize it is necessary to step through the standardization and professionalization it promises, and discover a way to access whatever may be on the other side—even if what one finds does not resemble art as we currently understand it… those that believe that art can not be reduced to an economic activity.[1] This very new residency currently has no external funding support. It is based on artists enabling and supporting other artists. Rufus Stone is a non-political and non-grant-making collaboration of artists and curators. This is a self-directed programme suitable for proactive and very independent artists. We take an enabling role and we are very open to taking a collaborative role depending on the project. Included: Central London accommodation (in the home of an artist) Possible rural accommodation (in the home of an artist) Utilities and administrative costs Access to wifi; a 24” Mac with Photoshop Support and assistance in accessing further resources In person and “virtual” discussions with artists and curators concerning work in progress Resident provides: Transport costs to/from London and local transport expenses Food (breakfast provided) Pocket money and all project funds THERE IS NO STUDIO PROVIDED WITH THIS RESIDENCY. However, If the work results in a public event, it is possible to use the flat for a reading, talk, installation etc subject to discussion. Artists are encouraged to seek their own funding through independent grant applications. If selected, the residency can be used as a “matching” contribution in grant applications. We are willing to be very flexible on dates to accommodate funding arrangements and can ‘hold open’ a residency slot for those in the process of securing grant funding. Health and other insurance: The resident is responsible for securing travel insurance which includes health coverage, and will sign a contract releasing Rufus Stone from any liability, personal or otherwise. Deadlines and dates: Whilst this is an open call, our first consideration period will commence from midnight 10 July 2014 for residencies to begin mid-September. Further Information and Application http://delfinafoundation.com/programmes/residency-programme/open-calls/research-fellowship Carnegie Museum of Art launches the Hillman Photography InitiativeForward-thinking photography initiative
The inaugural cycle of the Hillman Photography Initiative at Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) launches new programming on April 29 at http://www.nowseethis.org/, investigating the lifecycle of images: their creation, transmission, consumption, storage, potential loss, and reemergence. Technology accelerates the pace of this cycle, and often alters or redirects the trajectory of an image in unexpected, powerful ways. The Hillman Photography Initiative, a living laboratory for exploring the rapidly changing field of photography and its impact on the world, is among the most forward-thinking models of inquiry in a museum today. A group of external agents—Marvin Heiferman, Alex Klein, Illah Nourbakhsh, and Arthur Ou—joined CMOA curator Tina Kukielski and program manager Divya Rao Heffley in 2013 to pose a set of questions about the future of photography as an art form in a world in which any one individual sees thousands of images per day. The result is four projects that, taken together, investigate the boundaries and possibilities of photography through the way that an image travels. Conceived through an open, discursive process, unique in a museum setting, these projects include live public events at the museum, a pop-up reading room in the galleries, two collaborative web-based projects, and a series of commissions, including documentary videos, art projects, and writing. The website, nowseethis.org, fosters public conversations around the larger story that these four projects tell, and knits them together in a single experience. The Invisible Photograph unveils rare or never-before-seen views of hidden hubs of photography. The Sandbox: At Play with the Photobook initiates A People’s History of Pittsburgh, a collaborative, participatory photographic history project, and also invites the public to experience the art of the printed photobook as its seen through the eyes of two artists-in-residence. This Picture tracks the many reactions that can be elicited from a single photograph. Orphaned Images engages artists and writers to explore the anonymous, ubiquitous, “orphaned” image that is created as images are appropriated, altered, and lose authorship. The Invisible Photograph The Invisible Photograph, a five-part documentary series, investigates the expansive realm of photographic production, distribution, and consumption by way of the hidden side of photography, whether guarded, stashed away, barely recognizable, or simply forgotten. The Corbis Image Archive at Iron Mountain in Butler, PA, contains millions of photographs 220 feet underground, stored under refrigeration and kept under extremely tight security. The Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project in Mountain View, CA, reconstructs the earliest orbital photographs of the moon’s surface, seen for the first time in decades due to the obsolete format of the image data tapes. These and other new documentary productions, screenings, and discussions demonstrate the unexpected challenges in the seemingly simple act of producing, retrieving, and looking at an image. The Sandbox: At Play with the Photobook The Sandbox: At Play with the Photobook includes a temporary reading room and event space at the museum, with programming investigating the many ways that photobooks present and interpret images. Photographers Melissa Catanese and Ed Panar of Spaces Corners, a Pittsburgh bookshop specializing in photography books, will staff the reading room, and will be available to engage directly with the public on select days of the week. Catanese and Panar also lead the yearlong A People’s History of Pittsburgh project, compiling family-owned, found, and anonymous photographs and stories from the city’s residents to create an online archive that unearths and reconstructs narratives through the lives of Pittsburghers. Through online submissions, scanning parties, and community outreach, A People’s History of Pittsburgh takes shape on an interactive website. Catanese and Panar will conclude the project by editing and co-publishing a print photobook with CMOA, which will function as a collective photo album for the people of the city and its surrounding area. This Picture With millions of images produced and shared every day, what is the value of a single image? What can it do, and how does it travel? This Picture explores the breadth of what photographic images can say and do by tracking the responses and feedback a single image can trigger and generate. Each month, the museum invites the public to submit responses to a carefully selected photograph. Responses could take many forms and will generate a constellation of conversations. Experts in art, technology, and the social sciences will be invited to write online to enrich the dialogue. These images also serve as the basis for a collaborative project with CMOA’s education department to build visual literacy through a targeted engagement with area school teachers. Orphaned Images “Orphaned images” are increasingly common. They have been manipulated, circulated, corrupted, and shared; removed from their original authors or creators. The Orphaned Images project includes written and artist commissions around the pressing issues raised by these conditions, and investigates how photographs produce and take on meaning, both online and offline, in the world outside the artist’s studio. Expanding upon discussions about appropriation, distribution, transmission, and surveillance, the project considers new forms of photographic materiality, value, and agency. To participate in the projects, watch films, follow the discussions, or learn more about the Hillman Photography Initiative at CMOA, visit http://www.nowseethis.org/ The Hillman Photography Initiative’s first cycle of projects charts an ambitious course for one of the most forward-thinking photography programs at any museum. By placing discussions usually reserved for professionals and theorists in public spaces, the first cycle will present outcomes that directly address image-creators, and will shape future Hillman Photography Initiative programming at CMOA. Two new agents will be selected at the close of the year, while two remain for the next cycle, and brainstorming will begin anew. Support Support for the Hillman Photography Initiative was provided by the William T. Hillman Foundation, and the Henry L. Hillman Foundation. General operating support for Carnegie Museum of Art is provided by The Heinz Endowments and Allegheny Regional Asset District. Apply now for Berliner Liste 2014
The application period to the 11th BERLINER LISTE is open: galleries, project spaces and artists are cordially invited to apply for a booth at the biggest fair for contemporary art in Berlin.
New, exciting talents and gallery programs are particularly encouraged to apply and present their work to a wide audience of art lovers and collectors in the extraordinary atmosphere of the Postbahnhof in Berlin-Friedrichshain, near by the famous East Side Gallery. The light-flooded premises build the ideal architectural setting for the presentation of the artistic works. Interact with an international audience determined to experience art without barriers or borders.
Over 10,000 young collectors, art fanatics, artists and culture tourists attended last year’s fair with its 131 exhibitors from 31 countries. The fair addresses particularly young collectors and art lovers that are seeking potentially lucrative art works, prints and editions at a moderate price. The “ready to use” fair stands in white cube architecture are individually planned and have a reasonable price.
After the great positive resonance last year, the BERLINER LISTE offers again an international platform for photography. With its long tradition in photography and its many exhibition halls, Berlin plays a significant role in the photography world - more than enough reason to show again an exhibition section dedicated to this discipline.
After his successful start with the BERLINER LISTE 2013, Dr. Peter Funken is going to curate also this year’s fair. “Berlin still is a place for the new and particular, a spot for experiments and initiatives. Therefore it offers a chance and the potential for those who associate contemporary art with adventure, introspection and awareness - the BERLINER LISTE is a fair for professionals and newcomers. We will encourage the new and young emerging galleries and positions to join the fair. If your price segment varies from 750.00 to approximately 5,000.00 Euros for a piece, the BERLINER LISTE is the right platform for selling”.
The fair takes place from September 18th to 21st, parallel to the Berlin Art Week. Applications are open until the end of June. Apply now at www.berliner-liste.org
For any support or advice, please do not hesitate to contact our team via email ([email protected]) or telephone (+49 (0)30 77 008 993). Regarding artistic content, we can also put you in direct contact with Peter Funken.
Wishing you a sunny week

June 30–July 2, 2014 Deadline: May 30, 2014 Ticket price: £50 ( 5 bursaries available ) Reports from Sam Korman, Isla Leaver-Yap, Fionn Meade, Vivian Ziherl With conversations by Sarah Cook, Gerrie Van Noord 2014 will see the first Hospitalfield international summer school take place from 30 June to 2 July. Hospitalfield have worked with Isla Leaver-Yap to devise and programme this event. The summer school will start on the evening of Monday, June 30, and continue until the evening of Wednesday, July 2. Fieldwork: Reports On Event Curating is a three-day conversation to unpack the curatorial presentation of durational art work, namely the event. FIELDWORK addresses the mechanics behind event production: the use of the event as a short-circuit within or an alternative to the space of exhibition production; the changing intentions of documentation in shaping the event, both prior to and as postscript; the role of curatorial qualifications and schooling in engendering customised knowledge about and established formats for the event; and the conflicts between the arrival of the event and the location in which it occurs. With reports by international curators Isla Leaver-Yap, Fionn Meade, Sam Korman, Vivian Ziherl and parallel conversations hosted by Gerrie Van Noord and Sarah Cook that explore the role of the event in local contexts, Fieldwork presents the event as a space of circulation and becoming. We are offering camping spaces in Hospitalfield's beautiful grassy paddock, sheltered by trees and overlooking the sea. The summer school is fully catered with delicious produce from Hospitalfield's kitchen. Hospitalfield Arts residencies, summer schools, courses, and residential study visits are now taking bookings for 2014–2016, and are interested in new partnerships. We can collaborate on content and connections if required. Hospitalfield Arts is a contemporary art organisation, with a programme of residencies and public events, set within the exceptional heritage environment of Hospitalfield House which was left in trust for the support of artists in 1890. In 2014 we are working with contemporary artist, writers and choreographers including Claire Barclay, Janice Parker, Fiona Jardine and Sue Tomkins and in 2015 we will work with Graham Fagen for Scotland's presentation at the Venice Biennale, and also present a series of four open season events in Arbroath. Balmoral fellowships and project, foreign and exchange fellowships for 2015Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral
Deadline: 28 June 2014 Application fee: none Preconditions The conditions for all fellowships with the exception of the curator fellowship are a completed course of study in art (MFA or comparable degree) and two to three years (depending on the respective fellowship) of continuous artistic work after the conclusion of the studies until the beginning of the fellowship. Applications are also possible for autodidacts distinguished by special artistic achievements, as documented by exhibitions and prizes. To foster artistic dialogue and interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge of German or English is expected. I. International residential fellowships Six residential fellowships will be awarded to international visual artists. For the residencies for 2015, applicants’ artistic work should focus on or have some connection with or make reference to Dada. Dada was the impulse behind a great many developments, and has a great many facets. Methods of expression such as photomontage, collage, material pictures, assemblage, object art and room installation all owe their origins to the Dadaists. In the years after Dada, the boundaries between painting, performance, literature and music came to be more and more blurred and overcome. The far-reaching influence of Dada can be seen from the Pop Art and Fluxus art of the 1960s to '80s through to ready-mades and multiples, performance, happening and concrete poetry. What role does Dada play today? Since 2013, fellowships are offered in one artistic genre or one theme each year. This offering, which is unique in Germany, is intended to enable deeper mutual creative cross-fertilization among the resident artists. It will also lead to a more intensive specialist exchange of ideas with external artists, speakers, teachers, curators, etc. Two fellowships last three months and four fellowships last nine months. All residential fellowships run from June each year. The residential fellowships are endowed with 1,400 EUR a month and include free accommodation in the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral. II. International curator fellowship To foster dialog between artistic work and theoretical reflection, Balmoral awards a residential curator fellowship to a fellow in the humanities (preferably art history). The curator fellowship is awarded to persons whose university degree (at least MA) was completed not more than five years ago. For the curator fellowship, mastery of the German language spoken and in writing as well as good knowledge of English is essential. The fellowship lasts nine months and begins in June 2015. It is endowed with 1,400 EUR per month and includes free accommodation in the Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Balmoral. III. Project, foreign and exchange fellowships exclusively for artists with relation to Rhineland-Palatinate Relation to Rhineland-Palatinate means (and/or) is born in, has studied in, has lived or lives in, has worked or works in Rhineland-Palatinate. – Two six-month project fellowships (not tied to any site) – One six-month fellowship for New York (Flux Factory/Residency Unlimited) – One three-month fellowship for South Korea (Changdong or Goyang Art Studio) – Two six-month fellowships for the Cité Internationale des Arts, Paris – One five-month fellowship for Kuenstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf, Brandenburg/Germany The project, foreign and exchange fellowships are endowed with 1,200 EUR per month (except for South Korea). Awarding of fellowships A jury of specialists will award all fellowships, taking into consideration the developmental potential of the applicant’s artistic or theoretical work. Additional information and PDF application forms are available on our homepagehttp://www.balmoral.de. Applications must be made with these application forms. Other applications will not be taken into consideration. ARTIST OPPORTUNITY 2:
Open call for submissions to the 10th edition of Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival Deadline: 1pm GMT 16 June 2014 We are now accepting submissions for our Festival programme; entries will be considered for all areas of the Festival programme, including installations, screenings, and short film programmes - as well as the 2nd Inntravel Short Film Award. Each year, the Festival is curated to a theme, and this year we focus on ‘Border Crossing’ – taking audiences on a journey, starting in the border town of Berwick-upon-Tweed and travelling, migrating and transcending borders in all directions. Works submitted to the Festival should explore themes of cultural heritage, changing identities from individual to societal and cultural, travel and migration, and the crossing of boundaries. Within this theme, we encourage film and moving image submissions of all types and lengths including narrative and experimental, live action and animation, fiction and documentary. All single screen works under 20 minutes in length will automatically be eligible for selection for the Inntravel Short Film Award. PASSION FOR FREEDOM ART COMPETTION
CALL FOR ENTRIES – 6TH EDITION OF PASSION FOR FREEDOM ART COMPETTION Deadline: 20 September 2014 Submission fee: £15 The art competition is organised by Passion for Freedom, an independent group of friends standing up for freedom of speech and artistic expression. The annual international festival is a rare collection of works of "courageous artists" in the categories of film, photography, painting, sculpture, publications, journalism, book, performance and other forms of artistic expression. So far the competition has featured hundreds of artists from all over the world, including Sarah Maple, Steve Rosenthal, Robb Leech, Firoozeh Bazrafkan, Mehdi-Georges Lahlou among others. "Brave" artists from around the world such as Ai Weiwei (who spent three months in prison and is banned from contacting the media), Jafar Panahi (several times arrested on charges of propaganda against the Islamic Republic), Johan van der Dong (no galleries in Europe have courage to show his work for the fear of attacks), Ferri Farahmandi, Azadeh Behroozi and many others, showed their works at the PFF festival and still have the courage to create despite the threat to their lives and the safety of their family. Some are forced to hide behind a nickname, others withdraw their works or self-censor themselves to avoid "offending religious feelings". As every year, the entry is open from April. Works can be submitted by 20th September 2014. The festival will be held in November central London. Location and more details will be announced on later date. WHAT IS FREEDOM? HOW EASY IS IT TO LOSE IT? HOW HARD IS IT TO GET IT BACK? Please find detailed information, Submission Form, Terms and Conditions on our website. www.passionforfreedom.co.uk ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ “Honoured to have been the recipient of last year’s 'Visitors Choice Award' I would urge everyone to support, in whatever way that they can, the tireless work being done by the 'Passion for Freedom Festival’. The Festival brings together artists from many corners of the globe whose work treats about human rights issues and defends freedoms of expression, It provides a much needed platform for information dissemination, reflexive discussion and artistic articulation. It highlights ongoing repressive issues and potentially enables social, governmental, and dogmatic change at this time of increasing global conservatism.’ Steve Rosenthal (UK) Visitors Choice Award 2011 “Freedom is a fragile balance and they stated this with their beautiful view and exhibition they worked on so carefully and balanced. This festival deserves worldwide recognition and attention. It has more than proven its existence because it shows us how precious peace, freedom and security are” Johan van der Dong (Netherland) Shortlisted Artist 2012 |

Open to all international artists Deadline: 9 June 2014 Application fee: none The National Sculpture Factory wishes to announce its new programmatic strand Im/Plants, open to all international artists. Im/Plant: manufacturing An industrial site consisting of one or more buildings with facilities for manufacturing. A place of making, shaping and assembly, dedicated to social modes of production, as distinguished from the sometimes immaterial and solitary labour of art. A site of production, labour, involving relations of production—between workers, managers, technicians, consumers, the public—between individuals and a wider social field. Im/Plant: medical A surgical intervention leading to a graft onto/into a host system, to improve, modify or regulate functioning. A permanent or removable biologically compatible device, manufactured to replace an absent part, to support or to enhance an existing structure. Ideally the device should bring about a desired response in the host; however, the interaction between the implant and the neighbouring tissues can cause complications (allergic foreign body response, for instance). Im/Plant: botanical An opportunist organic entity, able to colonise an area by spreading vegetatively—e.g. pioneer plants that colonise an area that has not been previously occupied by an ecological community. Im/Plants proposes a programme of seasonal implantations (insertions) into the National Sculpture Factory. This project is open to Irish and international artists, curators, independent art groups, individual cultural and spatial practitioners, and collectives across all art disciplines. Artists/participants are implanted as productive agents, that is, invited to respond to the specificity of the National Sculpture Factory—as a site for manufacture; as a host organism; as a seedbed for propagation—in order to test, affect or re-imagine the boundaries of what the art organisation can be through alternative forms of production. Each implant is of a three-month duration and is programmed to happen seasonally. It is self-directing and self-sufficient, with an overall stipend of 3,000 EUR and with access to the full resources and supports of the NSF, adapted to the needs of each specific applicant. There are no prescribed outcomes, but each implant is expected to leave a trace, residue, or shadow, of their period of interactivity with the host organisation. Such outcomes are not restricted to the ephemeral and can be of a more permanent nature. For its part the NSF will be openly receptive to the unknowns made possible by interaction with these implanted agents. The Im/Plants strand in the NSF's annual programme is designed to act as a source of imaginative hybridization, to create as yet unknown forms of production or provocation, and enable the NSF to work with the broadest range of artistic practitioners, leading to the synthesis of new ideas and work practices within the artist-centric institution. NSF Im/Plants project allows the implanted artists to practically challenge the ideologies of the monolithic or static institution, and to act instead as a generative substrate engaging directly with the receptive NSF to external forces. In its making available of its resources, experience and network of relations, the NSF wishes, through these insertions open itself to the stimulus of new ideas, alien influences and new creative productive outcomes. Application details Criteria for assessment: the nature and quality of the proposition or provocation. experience relevant to this particular site-specific research implantation. the feasibility of each proposition as well as the nature and extent of the research and methodology being proposed Applicants are invited to propose themselves, their practice and their particular Im/Plant proposal in whatever form they deem relevant bearing in mind the considerations above and the context being offered. Applicants can develop proposals for Im/Plants with the understanding that they need not be present, or resident in Cork for the entire three-month season. This is not a studio-based residency, while a space in the NSF can be made available if necessary. Applicants should suggest how they propose to proceed over the three-month period and how this can lead to a constructive and productive engagement. For the full details for application, please visit our website. http://www.nationalsculpturefactory.com Proposal deadline All applications must reach the National Sculpture Factory by noon, Monday 9 June.
